Make a fixed window open?

Good morning. Our Argosy MH has 2 smaller fixed windows, one in the bath and one over the kitchen counter. Is there a way to make change these to an opening awning type window? Maybe take a larger window as a hardware and frame doner and do some cutting and welding to make it fit the opening and then figureing out the piece of glass.

Any thoughts?

What size are the current window openings? Is the area they are mounted to on the side of the MoHo flat or curved? Will you find structural supports in the way? Think "NEW" places to leak too! These considerations should all be addressed before you tear into this project. However, If you need more cross ventilation in the MoHo, this mod might just be the ticket. There are lots of the awning type windows out there in RV salvage yards. I'm sure you can find ones that will work for the existing openings or be a small mod of the opening. Don't only think Airstream part when you look. I would think you can do this. Good luck! Happy Trails, Ed

I haven't measured them yet but they're in the 18" x 24" range. You can see them in the pic. They have a slight curve, maybe about 3/4" of crown over the 24" length. I think any bit of air flow will help, if I can figure it out. thanks

The '66 thru '68 trailers have curved glass windows. They may be a close curve to the side of your MoHo. You can see the sizes of glass available for these windows at InlandRV.com or VintageTrailerSupply.com websites. Finding the entire frame assemblies might be harder. Perhaps the window/frame assemblies from a '70's trailer would be easier to obtain. Andy R. from Inland or Steve H. at VTS may be able to give you an idea how much curve the window frames have. You will be better off adapting an entire window and frame assembly in a standard size rather than trying to re-size the frame and glass. The thing to do would be to find something close. Once you know what you need, you can try buying new or sourcing one from a salvage yard like Colaw.

The bathroom window in my Excella, which opens, is 20 5/8 wide by 24 1/2 tall to the outside of the frame riveted to the outer skin. The other side windows that open are the same height and 32 1/2 wide.

Mine measure 20.5 x 28.5. Looking at the rivet lines arround them it look like I could go a little larger and not run into anything. thanks.

Motorhome side windows are designed to "slide", and not open as they do in trailers.

Having a motorhome window open, like the trailers, is hazardous, if it for any reason was opened during transit.

Thanks Andy. So it's hazardous to the window or the person opening it? And it's not an issue with a trailer because people don't ride in them?

It's a hazard to whatever the open window might hit when the motorhome is in motion.

Trailer owners, don't leave side windows open during transit.

In many states, the coach would be too wide, which is against the law when on a public road.

You would just need to be smart enough not to have this window in the open position when traveling. Only opened when parked. That would seem to be the cure for this issue. There is no law that says a MoHo cannot have a trailer type window. Andy was just pointing to the issue of having it open in transit. Ed
