Jalousie seals

What kind of seal, pile weatherstrip,etc. goes at the top and bottom of Hehr Jalousie windows on a ’64 Safari?

VTS has the side pile weather strips, and retainer discs and also lists clear windowpane seal (out of stock and not original on travel trailers).

Is there supposed to be a weather strip or seal across the top?

What goes on window frame where bottom pane contacts frame (more pile weatherstrip glued in place)?

My trailer is at P&S getting a new gray tank, but I believe that the Bulb Seal available at Vintage is what you need.

Generally I have been very "pleased"/happy w/everything I have bought from VTS . . . however those "clear windowpane seals" were useless. They would not stay in place - great idea, they just don't work.

I did buy all the other Jalousie window gaskets, pile strips, retainer discs . . . and they work great.

I haven't found a replacement for the bottom of the frame. Mine is still existing in place but rather hard, it's basically a bulb shape.

Looks like the bulb seal will fit top and bottom. Tried to order but VTS shows out of stock for all the seals I need. Inland doesn't show them listed (I could call).

Does anyone have another source for the side pile weatherstrip, bulb seal and disc material?

Where are mobile home/Florida home jalousie parts?

Hey MarkR,
When the clear seals were on did they seal?
Would a film of clear silicon/heat gun/super glue help hold them on?

There's a lot of air leaking between the panes and rattling when the wind blows. The wind always blows.

How did you cut the discs?

Do you know a glass shop near Folsom that can cut jalousie panes in a day or two? Seems I left one somewhere near Truckee on I-80.

"Doing Time in Folsom" . . . there's a lot of folks "doing time in Folsom" . . . mostly against their will.

Jalousie Glass: Kidwell Glass in Orangevale on Greenback Lane made mine, they are (and should be) laminated glass. They might be able to make them while you wait (?) 916.989.5507.

The Disc Material: I just used a razor blade to cut my discs - I might have some left over (and I might be able to find it (?)). You're welcome to it if you need it.

Clear Seals: I didn't use anything to attach them - for some reason, that I can't now remember, I didn't try that.

I've found on our 63 that Jelousie windows and seal are hard to put in the same sentence.. they all leak. My factory windows had a "J" shaped moulding that had a channel across the top over the top pane that it slid into. The top window has a round grove for piece to go in, the bottom has the "T" shaped that the part slide in, and neither VTS part no matter how much soap or anything will go in either, so right now we're going without. The bottom rested into the jelousie bulb seal VTS sells (vintage trailer supply). I hope that helps. They also sell the fuzzy stuff that slides up the sides to keep the water out of that area.

My Jalousie windows on my Tradewind have had all the seals replaced, put vulcom around where the frames attach to the trailer, and there still leaking I just don't get it maybe I need that j shaped molding on top of both frames? The seals are kind of tough to get in but do fit. Got every seal from VTS.

I think all Jalousie windows will leak, no matter what.

I assume the retainer disks are wedged into place and don't require some kind of adhesive to stay in place, correct?

I didn't use any adhesive on mine, and I have not lost one disk in over 15,000 miles of towing.

Yep, installed the retained disks today. Simply wedged them into place. The disks and window panes aren't going anywhere.

If the flap seal at the top of the window doesn't extend to the outter edge of the frame it will leak at the corners. Also caulk the lower frame corners ,where it goes into the wall , not on the face where the rivits are .

Can I ask what thickness the glass for jalousie windows are? I am thinking they are 1/4" as the metal clip on the ends is so thick. Thanks!

mine are 2 layers of 1/8" laminated together

I rebuilt mine last summer. It is in storage so I can not go look at it but has I remember, here are some of the things I learned. VTS had a seal that worked at the top. I believe it has a bulb with a T that slid into the slot. This stretches when putting it in so leave some extra at the ends and wait a day to trim it up. The little disks that hold window work great. You may need to tighten the clip so they hold better. The fuzzy trim at the sides also works well but I had a lot of trouble getting the old trim out. WD 40 did not work but a liquid wrench soaking did. I believe they had a trim with a little flap that I used on the bottom (again leave extra and then trim). The clear trim they sell for the bottom of the panes does not work. If you need to replace a pane just go to a good glass shop. You will never get it to seal completely but you can improve it. I took out all the panes and cleaned and oiled the hinges. I spend a lot of time trying to clean out the trim slots. I put any thing I could think of to loosen grime and repeatedly blew out with air.
