How to fix window gasket?

How does one fix this? My 1977 Airstream, Safari, land yacht has several windows like this. Will the VTR 1970 Airstream Window glazing Strip VTS-477 fit? From my searches I am thinking this is the right one? any confirmation?

Not positive about your model year but I used that 1970's U-Channel glazing strip from Vintage Trailer Supply successfully on my 1969 Safari. It looks the same as your pic but to be safe maybe order a foot to compare it to what is exposed in yours.

In order to replace the gasket you will need to remove the window and take it apart. There is a gasket that will fit this particular window--I bought a carton of it for my '76 Caravanner and rebuilt eight windows with it. The stuff that VTS sells is too narrow for an exact rebuild of the double-paned windows. Mine is from the same supplier from which VTS must obtain the "-477" gasket--it is just wider, 1/2 inch to be exact. But it worked quite well for what I did.

If you just want to fix that portion of the gasket (without taking the window out and rebuilding it) that has separated and shrunk, as you show in your picture, then I would do what many others on this forum whose advice I respect and endorse, and cut out the offending portions of gasket and apply either trempro or sikaflex. If done correctly it will look and work fine. A lot less work.

I had to rebuild my windows anyway--the gaskets were really bad, and the film on the interior of the glass panes was bubbling and peeling.

If you decide you need the gasket that I have, let me know. I can sell you some--I had to buy a case, which was about three times more than I needed. I also have a lot of butyl tape, which I used to pack and space between the two panes of glass.

And, I also have a slightly wider gasket that fits the Vista View windows.

Larry, have you tried asking them at VTS about it?

They're usually pretty good about that sort of fitment info., & they can also send you a short snippet of it to compare for yourself (they did for me to try another type for my `60 Avion T20).

This is the route I took, and I am very pleased with the result.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to help, I think I will do a test on one window using the cut and caulk method. See how it turns out and then decide if I am up for full on replacement or not. (I have lots to do, have just started stripping the exterior in prep for polishing)

I have this type gasket also worse than yours, will this cause a leak, the drip cap looks good and the gasket is pulled in top right corner near the leak . Or do you think it is the weather-strip . I will fix it by calk and see

I have some of it--actually quite a bit of it for the double-paned. I had to buy it in a very large quantity. Please send me a private message if you are interested in some. We'll need to determine that it is exactly what you need.

I was going to go to a single pane glass as I have heard that so many of the double pane Windows fog up again. How are yours ? Have any of your failed ? How long has it been since you restored them. I sure do need a solution. Thx Jack

I rebuilt thirteen of my windows, all double-pane, last summer. Turns out the very first one I did failed this winter and has condensation inside. I'm assuming I learned something along the way since all the others are just fine. So I will redo the first one in a week or so. I most likely didn't get a good seal between panes. I used butyl tape between the panes and it's possible I was sloppy on the first one I did. I'm confident I will get it right this time. If any of the others were bad I'd know it by now.

Don't fret! If I can do it anyone can. The important thing is to keep everything clean and pay attention to measuring correctly. All of mine had failed tinting one the inside. They look brand new now.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to take these windows apart?

The best thing is to go to single pane glass. Use 1/8 butyl tape with 3/8 x 3/4 rubber gadget from can am. In Canada. You have to cut the gasget material to 3/8 x 9/16. It works and looks great. Jack

Along with the gasget it works great. I went back and caulked the exterior with a syringe call me if needed. 612-282 3971

I have single panes in my 72. After much online searching for the proper gaskets, I purchased gaskets from CR Laurence (same as VTS) The gaskets have "ribs" that make it nearly impossible to fit in the window channel When you remove the original gaskets, you'll see these "ribs" are non existent . After a little trial and error, I made a jig and trimmed down gaskets from CR Laurence. It was still some work but using Murphy's oil soap and some rubber hammer negotiation, they went together fine.

Pic 1 is the modified gasket fitting in the frame
Pic 2 is the gasket pre-trimming
Pic 3 is my jig for trimming the ribs (tedious but got the job done)
Pic 4 is the best pic i have on my computer of the finished rear window
back together. You can see how well the gasket fits.

I used the modified gasket on the front, rear and all the side windows, as well as the vista views. I haven't tackled the wing windows yet. I'm still on the fence about re-installing them as single panes.

Readingthe earlier posts, I guess others have been able to make the gasket work w/o modification. I hope this post helps if your run into the same problem as I did.
