How do these windows open?

This is probably a stupid question but we are new to Airstreams. We have a 75 Argosy and we can't open the windows without having to push them open from the inside. The bars that attach to the windows and the plastic channel that locks them open in 3 positions are both still there and attached. I just don't know how to open them once we replace the screens. I checked the forum and didn't find another thread on this topic but I apologize if I over looked one. Thanks for all of your help.

You just lift up on the bars to open the window and then place the bars in the channel. I say "just"-sometimes this can be difficult to do so I usually have my wife help from the outside.

PS-make sure the locks are released.

The gaskets have been known to stick, so an old credit card can be slid between the window glass and the gasket to allow the window to open.

Use a dry silicone to lube the gaskets after the windows and door are open.

Unlock the window at the bottom. Lift while pushing the side bars out. There is a knack to it.
Once unlocked. Gently pry the window from the outside to free it up from the stuck gasket.
It is possible, once the window is free. Just to lift it up from the outside.

I imagine these windows are different than the style on our 2005 Classic, but I also have trouble opening ours sometimes because of infrequent use and the rubber gaskets sticking to the windows.

I found I could pry them open from outside to break them free from the gaskets but I was concerned that sooner or later I would break a window doing this.

So what works better for me is a large (6" dam?) suction cup on the glass from the outside.

The suction cup has a vacuum release valve on it so it is easy to remove once I pull the window open.

Brian.

PS - I was able to use the same suction cup to successfully pull out a dent the the previous owner had made on an end cap up on the roof, presumably from stepping on kneeling on it. Worked very well!

Unlike the windows on today's A$'s. The '75 Argosy has a metal frame around the window.

Thanks guys! I can open them fine with help from the outside. I just thought we were doing something wrong since it took two of us to open the windows. These windows are heavy though, especially the big front one. I guess it will take us a while to learn all these little things.

If you have the lift arms, which would be on each side of the window, you have to push them in the direction of each other (toward the center), and as you are doing that, push downward to open the window. If yours operates like my 78 Sovereign, there should be three positions open. Im thinking that since you had help from the outside, that was enough to release the catch as you pushed down. Maybe.
There is no such thing as a stupid question here. You may see some goofy answers though.
Have fun with your new Argosy, and welcome to the forum!

The key is getting lube on that gasket. I typically spray some silicone on a paper towel and then wipe the gasket after you get the window open. Do it enough and you will eventually see those windows open fairly easily.

The ones you're describing didn't come on Argosy trailers, I don't think. I've seen them on Airstreams of certain years but the Argosy ones all seem to have the simpler metal rods you push upwards to lift the windows and those don't give you much leverage when the gaskets are sticky.

Sticky Windows

I just saw an ad in Airstream Life for a "sticky window release" device. It looked like a Teflon screw installed in the inside bottom of the window. (Maybe one screws it in to break the seal?) Anyone have any experience with this item?

Pushing on a single "spot" on piece of glass with that plastic/nylon screw can generate many smaller pieces of glass. Running an expired edit card between the gasket and glass places no stress on the glass. After lubing the gasket with dry silicone, the windows will not stick for quite awhile.

Credit Card slide and silicone from a tube, lightly applied to the gasket. They open easy after that.

I think this trick works well on the glass windows that push directly out (hinged at the top) from the bottom. The 1991 345 motorhome I saw last week had slider windows in tracks. Not sure this method could work, but one can try.
