Galv. Heavy Gauge Screen Purchase
Hi all, I need to replace all the screens in my vintage AS and was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy the screen material in smaller quantity?
I know I can get it in 100 ft rolls - 36" 18x14 Galv. Screen Code: 1115088 Hanover Wire Cloth, but its $85! Anyone else need any? I would be happy to share or split it up since I have no need for 100 feet. Or better yet, does anyone have a partial roll?
Welcome to BuilderDepotsells it as mentioned above for $84.52.

I thought the ordinary hardware store variety would work OK? Is there a specialized screen I need to know about? If so I would be interested in sharing a rolll. Is this heavy duty screen any more difficult to install?

I have replaced my screen a few times. I can find a close match at home depot for a few dollars.

Heavy Screen Source
According to RJ's great "how to" site, he specs galvanized steel screen which my Home Depot does not carry. I did buy the screen roller tool at Blaine.

If it is a special or vintage material that you are looking for, then you might get lucky at your local mom and pop hardware store, like Ace or True Value, or preferably even smaller than that.
If you just want to match the look, then aluminum screening should suffice, which is available just about anywhere in small quantitites.

I'd personally go with nylon screen, it won't rust or corrode, is cheaper and easier to keep clean. Also it is easier to cut to shape for our windows. The down side is it will tear easier.

I have used charcoal grey fiberglass screen from the big box stores, it looks like the original, installs easier and is cheap to purchase.

Another advantage of Nylon screen is that it returns to it's original tension if it is accidentally stretched. Galvanized and/or Aluminum screening usually stays stretched, making it look baggy.
Inquiring toddlers and even doggy noses can do amazing things to a screen in a matter of nanoseconds..

I used black nylon since it is easier to see through - though a lighter color makes it a little more private, somewhat harder to see into at night... .

Solar Screen
Andy, What type do you suggest? Will it be heavy enough so that I can fold it over the edge and using the screen tool bend it in to hold?
I have a 56 vintage.

Home Depot has "solar screening material."
It's thicker than regular screening, so you might have to reduce the size of the spline.
It works great for us, and our customers too.

Screen for Hehr Standard Windows
MediaEtc has a 1956 Airstream.
From 1952 to 1957 Airstream used a model of window made by Hehr called the Standard. It is recognizable because although it uses rectangular glass it looks like it has rounded corners when you stand outside due to the aluminum trim on the outside.
I've attached a photo of this style window.
These windows require steel screen mesh because there is no spline used and the mesh must be crimped around the frame. Aluminum and other soft screens do not hold.
With later windows, you have many more choices, but not with these earlier windows.
$85 for a 100-ft roll is a very good price. I'm guessing you could buy the roll and then sell what you don't need to folks on this list pretty easily.

I purchased a two foot by five foot piece (ten SF) for about $1 per SF at a local glass and screen place in Anaheim, CA.

Just digging through old threads, but Vintage Trailer Supply now carries the galvanized screen for Hehr standard windows.

I used a 1/4" x 6" carriage bolt as a crimping tool. The round head is small enough to fit behind the flange and inside the window channel. The square collar slides along the flange and crimps the screen tightly.

Metal screening went out with the times.
If solar screening is best for a home, then it certainly should be great for any RV.
Keeping sun heat out of the RV, is a very good thing.

Andy,
What do you suggest for the early 1950's Hehr window screens?

Bill.
We encourage everyone to switch to "solar" screening material.
It's just as easy to install as any other screen material, and does a real number on keeping some unwanted heat from the sun, out of the trailer.
If we are going "green" then lets use less electricity, to cool the coaches, by keeping some of the heat out.
