fuzzy seal for screens

i am restoring my trailer and wanted to know if anyone knew where to get the fuzzy material that is on the screens.

Inland Rv has it. You have to pull the top string out and it unravels and then it is the fuzzy stuff! I went through this a while back. It works great!

I replaced some of my fuzzy window lever guides on some of my screens and was very disappointed that within a month of replacement, there were already big gaps left in the fuzzy seal where the window guides sit when the windows are closed. I don't think I'll redo any more of mine because the ones I just did have gaps big enough for bugs to get back in already.

That should not have happened.

Contact your dealer or Airstream for possible warranty coverage for those plates.

I hoped to find out how you get TO the fuzzy seals to replace them. Can anyone give me a heads up ? Looks to me like the inner window casing must come off to get to them. Thought I'd ask before starting.

You remove the screens first.

Then you can reach the backside of the screen frame.

Scrape the old fuzzy seal off and replace it with the new material..

I replaced some of mine but within weeks that gaps reappeared where the window slides rest when the windows are shut. Not sure if it's worth replacing any more of them.

Did you get the adhesive on the fuzzy part, If you did this would cause a gap. Do not use a spray on adhesive, but a brush on, and only apply on the perimeter surface

Nope, no adhesive on the fuzzy stuff, only on the frame. I think the stuff just gets a memory after a while and stays where the lift bars are constantly pushing on it.

The Airstream fuzzy bug seal for the screens, if properly install, will not take a set for many years.

One of the white threads "must" be removed after installation, to keep the fuzzy active.

We have never received any feedback of a short life span.

All the Argosy windows have been re-screened in AlumaBrite aluminum and I’m working on the fuzzy stuff right now, experimenting with putting the glue on the frame or the glue on the edge of the fabric.

I’ll report the results, hopefully without wasting too much Bug Seal.

I’ve re-read this thread and another “fuzzy” thread started by CHUCK, the Double Secret Moderator, back in 2002 and it is not apparent where exactly the fuzzy strips go on each side of the lever.

On my Argosy window frames, the slot for the lever is 5/16” wide. The space available for glue on one side of the opening is only 1/4”. The other side has 1/2” available.

The Bug Seal fabric itself is 1/2” wide.

This means that once you’ve glued the fabric on the 1/4” side of the frame virtually all of the opening ( save about 1/16”) is covered by the fuzzy strip.

If you put the other fabric strip nose-to-nose on the other side you’ll have 1/4” of fuzzy on one side of the lever and only 1/16” on the other.

Does this mean that you should “overlap” the fuzzy stuff, one piece on top of the other, by about 1/4” when gluing it down?

Anyone who knows please tell me.

yeah, they need to be overlapped. I remember running into the same issue. When you pull the thread to fray the fuzzies, the threads from each side will eventually work together and intertwine. if they're not overlapped, wherever the window arm is in the slot will push them apart quite a bit, leaving a pretty large gap...big enough for skeeters to get through.

Its hard to describe...play around with it, and you'll get it. If you can do all that other fabulous stuff to your trailer, you can do this!

also...make sure you look closely at the fuzzy material, you'll see that on one edge, the threads are "looped", and the other, they're cut. make sure that looped edge is toward the outside of the slots..."brushed" ends toward the middle.

Chuck's right. I just did mine on the 75 Argosy, same screens as SmokelessJoe. Looks better than new! With the frame face down and the backside facing up, I slightly overlapped each 10-11" strip (2 for each side) to create a very small "mound" in the middle. Once the glue set up I was able to run my finger down the middle of both fuzzy pieces to cause both fuzzy pieces to interlace (combine). Doing this made any mound almost undetectable from the front side. I did this about 6 months ago and I'm very pleased with the results.

By the way, I tried gluing one screen BEFORE pulling the string out and another screen AFTER pulling the string out. Personally, both procedures worked okay, but I had better luck pulling the string BEFORE gluing the strips down. It seemed to give me a better idea of the exact center of each fuzzy strip. My free info.

Sierra is right: unraveling the strip before gluing is much easier. You also have the space between the remaining two lines of stitching as a guide for were to apply the glue this way.
