Changing 1957 window cranks to 1954 levers?

Anybody ever try this? Both windows are the Hehr standard style, but we'd like to change our 1957 bulky cranks to the early 50's levers.

Despite being squeaky, we're finding levers have a few advantages:
- lower profile when closed, which increases our options for shades.
- We could remove the 57's locks, since the levers simply pop into a slot.
- Levers don't get stripped out like the cranks.
- Their "teeth" keeps the windows more rigid when open

Both styles use the channels that split the windows into thirds. So, without having them in front of me for direct comparison... can anyone think of why this wouldn't work?
