Broken window in our Safari.

While parked, we lost the road side crank-out window of our 97 Safari. A million pieces of shard glass in the driveway is all that remains. According to AS at Jackson Center, the manufacturer is no longer in business. That
would be Creation Glass of Elkhart, In. Anyone know another supplier that
I could go to ? The window that broke is approx. 8X30 dark tint or smoked. I haven't given up on Airstream yet. Is it possible to have one made by any glass company. Anyone have any experience in this area? Here's hopeing AS comes through for me....

If the frame is good you can probably get the glass made. You would need to look for a Tempered Glass company. I am not familiar with your window. It sounds like a vista view but they don't open. You might post a photo. I know a place that can make a tempered panel but only with a architectural glass stamp. They made one for my insulated glass panel a few months ago. I had a DOT stamp on outside glass and Architectural stamp on the inside. The ideal situation is to have DOT stamp and they cost the manufacture thousands of dollars.

You could take it to Jackson Center, and have them replace the window with one that's currently available.

Colaws, the RV boneyard in Missouri, might have an Airstream on the lot with similar windows.

A picture of this window style would be nice.

Hiya, JIm - sorry to hear you lost your window. What happened? Too much heat and the adhesive let loose or something?

Hi PM. guess it was all the heat we've been having lately. Even had the AC running to keep the inside cool. Big surprise to see glass all over the driveway. I found a local supplier that can make me a 8X30 tempered smoked for about $50. Airstream has not found a replacement as of yet. They suggested I replace the entire window which would be mega bucks. The install would be up to me to do and I am not a glass man yet. Problem is getting the remaining slivers of glass out of the 3 "c" channels that hold the pane in place. No heat as it may cause the larger window to explode. I need suggestions from someone who has been through this before. Help please !!! I have two fingers cut already.

I would probably take a flat head screw driver and hammer, then gently tap the bits down the channel and out one of the ends.

Timaah, unless I hear from AS soon, thats exactly what I am going to do. In addition I will apply window putty around all the bits of glass remaining
and of course Don a pair of safety glasses.The adhesive has a very tight
grip on the remaining particles of glass. Hopefully the putty will keep the fragments in check. I'll let you know how it goes. Right now I'm not a happy camper.

Putty sounds like a good idea. I used hd shop vac and painters tape when I had this experience last week. Good luck with AS customer service.

I googled Colaws today, maybe they will have the window I need. Will advise if they respond. Really though, I'm banking on AS to come through as our home base is only
35 miles away from AS factory. Been there many times, even before we bought our Safari. Can't get enough of that place.

The easy way to get the tempered chips cleaned up is using a box knife using gloves and simply putting it between the glass and frame and cut the sealer.

Went to Jackson Center yesterday, they confirmed that the lower jalousie window is not available as their supplier went OOB. Other option was to go with a complete new window frame and all. Cost is $210 plus labor to install. Colaws returned my internet message yesterday also, Don't want to go this route as to not knowing age and condition and will it be OEM. I want to keep the unit as original as possible, so I ordered new window. Chris was very helpful and ordered immediately. I should be ready to travel in four weeks. Maybe by that time the fix is in, all this super hot weather will be history. Thanks forum for your support. Anyone need an upper half roadside window with a missing lower half ?

Just in case someone is scrolling through this older thread. A company named Parkin purchased much of Creation Glasses old inventory. They have a website "http://creationwindows.net/page2.html" (I couldn't get this to work on a hyper link for some reason) you can find out if they have a part you need. Also, SOME Hehr pieces will fit these windows.
