Back Window Shattered While Towing

I have a 25' FB that was at a distant dealer for some warranty work. The dealer arranged for a transport company to return the trailer to me. On the way home, the back window shattered. I don't have any more information that this right now. I'll ask the dealer for pictures when tey get the trailer back.

Is this a common occurrence? I guess something could have bounced up and caused the damage, but it doesn't seem as likely as a front or even a side window.

Either way, it seems as though the trailer was still under the control of the dealership/trucking company. As such they would be responsible for safe delivery, IMO.
Yes tempered windows can shatter at odd times, for seemingly little or no reason.

The back center flat window or one of the rounded panoramics?

It will be interesting seeing who assumes responsibility. Were you still under the year warranty?

Commercial transportation companies are resposible for all damages, regardless.

Andy, I know you've shipped more trailers than me (0) but are they responsible regardless no matter what that the cause is their error or a defect in the item being delivered?

A transportation company is under contract to delivery the trailer, in exactly the same condition as they received it.

If anything happens to it, they are responsible.

Sure they can say the glass blew out by itself.

Really?

Did the driver back into something? Possibly, or maybe not.

The door is open to all kinds of if's, and's, and but's

That's why trucking or transport compnies carry liability insurance.

Might not be their fault at all.

But, the fact is that it happened while it was in their possession.

That makes it "the end of story."

Rich, which window? My '06 Safari 25' FB pano windows show edge distortion from the forming process -- whereas my '74 Argosy's pano windows are distortion free -- neither of which should matter if the finished glass is tension free and the frames are pressure neutral.

Andy, I would think you weren't the dealer involved. You certainly have the wide experience across the insurance & dealer sides of the industry to provide an informed opinion.

I'm not sure what window it is yet. The dealer just called this morning and told me about the damage, but hadn't gotten the trailer back. As soon as I know, I'll post more information about the damage.
The dealer has already said that if Airstream doesn't cover it through the warranty, the transport company insurance will take care of it. So, I'm not worried about that.

tempered (safety) glass is stressed glass. it will shatter into lots of little pieces rather than shards. the glass is heated up, formed if necessary then rapidly cooled. this stress is held throughout its life. if the [quote] frames are pressure neutral [quote] then bouncing down the road will not cause them to break.

your trailer may have been loaded and tied onto some other kind of trailer and then bounced around on tougher suspension.

i hope the transport company does the right thing and delivers your FB back to you all windows in tact.

Here's the response from the dealer:

"I got your trailer back yesterday. It appears that the window came unlatched while driving the drivers side missle window broke; there is no damage to the frame or the side of the trailer."

I would also ask what they were doing to protect the interior of the trailer from the elements.
