Airstream said it couldn't be done...

...or, 🎶'I can see clearly now the "pane" is gone...'🎶🎶
We finally finished a little project I began working on a few years ago.
Airstream said it was "not possible".
I almost gave in a couple of times but I finally got all of the pieces together and saw it through.
For my wife Dorsey a door window that can be seen through!
As requested...

It really is a great addition to our Bambi. Not sure why Airstream spec's the windows in the door with the etched surface that they do. We will add a Phifertex panel that can snap in place for privacy when we need it.
We both love being able to see out!

Nice work! I was checking out your blog and I remembered seeing your Airstream pick up video on YouTube a couple years ago! Your wife did a great job with it.

Anyway, way to stick with it!

Excellent. I have tried to get rid of the frosted glass too. The problem has always been obtaining a clear class with the proper curve.

Great job! I have always thought about doing the same thing. I'm sure readers would like more information like what did the frame and window cost, and who and what did you order the clear glass from at what cost.

For anyone who would like the name and number of Airstream's glass supplier, who happily supplied me with a piece of clear, tinted, glass, send me a PM and I will let you have the information.
I honestly can't remember what I paid for the glass as it was a few years ago...

OK, I'm confused. Were they all made with the opaque? If so, mine must have been redone as it is clear as a day.

I believe it is just the later or more recent Airstream's that got the frosted window in the door.

I wondered about that too when we bought ours from another couple. I asked the guy and he didn't know. My wife says it's privacy glass because there is no curtain on that window and people could be looking in at night. I say 'it serves them right'. Anyway, you'd have to be standing on the steps to be peeking in or you'd have to be fairly tall and easily identifiable.

Seems to me that it wouldn't be very hard for AS to put in some king of shutter or blind that you could pull down.

We will put in 4 snaps and make a panel of phifertex fabric for those times our neighbors seen too curious. I think the cost of the fabric and snaps is less than $10... It will provide as much privacy as the original glass and we can store it anywhere when we don't need it...

Airstream said it couldn't be done

Congratulations!

So happy to see you've tackled this successfully. Any idea why AS is so proprietary as to how/why a clear glass isn't an easier option? This opaque window is so annoying especially when the door is opened which then also blocks the view from our kitchen windows.

Our theory is that if it can be built it certainly can be changed or improved. Thanks for sharing your innovative solution.

Always wondered why Airstream doesn't install a clear window on the door. It's great to know that one can modify this but I'd be interested to hear why they insist on the opaque window.
Great weam-turk by the way!

PM sent!
Be aware, this glass is the one used in late model door windows. Our Airstream is a 2012.
Be sure it will fit your Airstream before you order it...

It looks good. You might take a look at an older model. Ours is an 86 and has a pull down roll up shade inside the door. You might be able to do that to cover your door window.

Bruce,
In looking at the door, it sort of looks like the glass in the window can be removed from the inside by screwing out the frame attachments, then accessing the glass. Did you try this, or maybe that's how you did it? If not, how did you buck the rivets?

I much prefer the clear glass. Airstream missed a turn on this one...
