Where can I get the replacement weatherstripping to go around the door of my 1971 Land Yacht?

If you are a purist, most any Airstream dealer,

If not purist but want it to work well,
Home depot, Weather stripping.

Hard part is getting the old stuff off.

I am certain a dealer will chime in and tell you horror stories of not keeping it pure

I'll admit I'm a purist, but not to a fault. Don't tell anyone, but I used a different style wire cap when I replaced my backup light sockets

I don't know if your '71 door seal is the same as the one on my '67, but on mine, the seal is not made of foam like the stuff sold at home improvement centers. As a consequence, it lays flatter. As I understand it, the design of the seal incorporates a small flap which seals tighter when wind hits it.

A foam-type seal from a home improvement store may make your door harder to close if your original seal was thinner.

unless you are keeping your AS as a collectible, I would always use the best product I can find original or not. Certain Airstream specific items of course, excluded.

Often times it is the new version minor replacement parts that are better suited to the job on these older rigs.

I recall when I changed out my woodgrain stripe for a new look, I got a fair amount of good natured ( I hope) flack about it. But it sure did improve the look of my coach.

You can buy several thicknesses of Weatherstripping at HD.

The contributor above is correct if you use stripping that is too thick it will hinder the door closing.

I think you can get weatherstrip as thin as .25 inches. I think if you look real hard you may even find some in white rather that black or grey.

How much did that OEM weatherstrip cost you at inland?

I paid $0.75 per foot (plus adhesive).

To pre-empt the replies that are sure to follow, "Yes, it is more expensive than a foam gasket." But, since Airstream used foam gaskets on other parts of my Overlander, I decided they used this particular style of gasket on the door for a reason.

I will make a multitude of mistakes on my Overlander before its maiden voyage. I would like to think they will be out of ignorance, not arrogance that "I know better than Airstream (and my way was cheaper)".

Sorry, didn't mean to rant. As you can see below, there are plenty of areas waiting for mistakes to be made:

It was honest question on cost of gasket and I admire your purism, nothing wrong with that at all

I am not recommending either approach, merely pointing out some options.

Which way does this weather striping go and how far from the edge of the door? I'm assuming that the fins slant toward the edge of the door - is that right? In cross section would it look like the picture that I've attached?

Almost right...we just replaced the gasket on our '64 GlobeTrotter this spring. The gasket actually goes on BOTH the FRAME and the DOOR on ours. (see sketch below) I can take a picture later this afternoon...

Thanks Shari. When I ordered the weatherstrip from Inland I was told that it only went on the door and that I needed 16', which is about right to go around the door once. Should I have ordered 32'? The weather strip that was there was not original. There is an old gasket on the door frame like you show in your drawing, but I wasn't sure if it was original or not. It's more of a rounded shape, not the kind with the fins.

How much door gasket is needed depends on the year of the trailer, and on the type of gasket.

Thanks Andy. I have a 1964 Overlander. Am I okay with gasket only on the door, or should there also be gasket on the flange of the door jamb as shown in Shari's drawing? Is there a specific measurement from the edge of the door that the gasket should be?

If done properly, the gasket is only needed on the door.

The gasket is installed next to the edge of the door.

Again, the flare must go outward, as Sheri has shown.

We just replaced it as it was originally...both the door & the jamb on our trailer.

Here's the pics...first one is the left side jamb just below the latch catch and the second is the latch-side edge of the door. They are facing as in my earlier sketch above ~
