Travel Stickers

Anyone collect travel stickers? Have seen old photos where people decorate their inside door with decals. I have a few and also have a stack of vintage postcards. Think it is a cool idea but afraid to junk it up. We have a '68 so kinda goes with the times. Any pics?

Thats a cool thing to do on the inside of the door, a definite conversation starter!

We did the same thing last year. I wanted to show all the places we have been so I bought a very thin and flexible magnet that had self adhesive on the back that you peel off and stick to the inside of the door. It's about the width of the door by maybe 30" tall that I put on the lower part of the door. it comes in many colors but I went with white. Now we can display all the magnets from all the places we have been or you can use Velcro to attach anything else that you want to put on the door. It looks great . When we get up to our lot in the mtns this weekend I will snap a picture of what it looks like.

I collect them. Easy, small, fun. Still find them here and there.

The Lindgren-Turner Company travel decals have the best, most detailed art work and best colours. I have about 200 originals kept in binders. Even a book was printed about them, Coast To Coast. They become addictive.

Dad got me started. They were 10c at travel stops and roadside attractions. They were like 1960’s travel badges to show where you’ve been. Dad put them all over the side windows of the '59 Mercury Station Wagon (with 5 kids) back in 1960 during the Great Cross Country Trek from Mass to California across Route 66. Still have his pile of his duplicates: 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics, Lake Tahoe, etc.

When I bought my own ’64 Safari the interior door already had 20 travel decals from previous owner journeys through Maine and Canada. I kept them there and added my own travels to outside windows: Alaska, Arctic Circle, Montana, Yukon, BC, Banff, OR, WA, Glacier Park, Grand Canyon, Cozy Cone Motel, Mohave desert, Disneyland etc.

Be careful, if you try to use originals, some of the old water decals fall apart.
If someone wants to do pro job of scanning & reproducing them I have some to work with.

Reproductions available, but usually wrong size, poor quality/ink/material.
They look cool on Airstream windows.
VW Bus guys love them too.

Have fun, travel well.

Safari64 - Thanks for sharing your story. The book idea may be a good way to go with the postcards. Most of them are actual cards with writing on the back. May be able to do high quality copy of them. You sure have a lot of them from some great places. If you ever have time I would love to see pictures .

We don't collect vintage travel stickers, but the inside of Lucy's door has a number of travel stickers that we have put on in recent years from places that she has been. Every time that we see a sticker that we like while traveling, we'll buy it and slap it on Lucy's door.

Here is a link to a cool site that sells vintage travel stickers. Prices are reasonable and would be right in line with your '68. They are original decals so should only be used inside. It would be great to see somebody make vinyl stickers out of some of the artwork on these.

We replaced the panel on the fridge door with a piece of white hard board from HomeDepot.

Whenever we can find them we buy a sticker when we travel to document our destinations. Our "policy" is that we have to have done something in a location to earn a sticker, filling up with gas and using the restroom doesn't count, we have to visit an attraction or stay over night.

Once the panel gets full we can remove it I'll hang it in my man cave and start the next panel.

We like to collect stickers and when we first became Molly's,(our trailer), caretakers we also thought the inside of the door was a good spot. We didn't want to mess up the door so I put a very thin piece of plexiglass type material on with some small screws. This now can be removed with only a few small holes that can be patched.
It's also very smooth and stickers adhere well. If I need to scrape off a sticker I don't have to worry about injuring anything, something I'm good at! Also I think the white background shows off the stickers well.

STREAMTEAM - I love it. Exactly what I was looking to see. So, are they easy to find (buy) when on vacation? Do they still sell these at truck stop travel spots and tourist attractions? I know I have seen the static cling window kind.

This is a link to Ranger Doug's...lots of cool postcards and stickers from the all the NP's(repos of course)...we've displayed a few stickers so far. But we also have rule that we can't put up stickers unless we've been there, with Molly, so we'll just have to revisit those NP's that were post Molly.
