Stupid Dead Bolt Lock!!!!

I find this thread confusing. I have an 04 ccd and the lock i have is pictured in post #47. It has a turn style deadbold which can be opened with key from outside. The problem with mine is not the deadbolt. It is the door handle lock with sliding lock mechanism that can be accidentally hit with one of your fingers as you exit the AS. VIOLA. Locked out.
From what i gather the problem is with the older deadbolts that have a sliding pin that can not be unlocked from outside. But then again. Andy says this problem is with the new locks . Post #59.
Clear as mud. Im gonna get some keys cut and stick em everywhere.My lock is pictured below.

zedex, this thread has been not so clear. I think it's not a problem with ours, but I don't know. Once it happens, it seems you would be able to remember to avoid hitting the slide on the way out.

Hi Gene. If you have the lock in post #61, which i suspect you do. You "CAN" lock yourself out by accidentally hitting the latch as you walk out the door. I know because i have done it myself. And when it happened i thought to myself.....WTF is wrong with airstream and their locks. But it is not a deadbolt problem,but a door lock problem.
This original thread was about the older door locks with sliding deadbolt,post #60.
Someone should edit the whole thread or make the door lock,deadbolt problems a sticky and have pictures. It would alleviate alot of confusion.
In the mean time i had a couple extra sets of keys cut ,and stashed them.So now come hell or high water i can get in the trailer. Assuming of course i can remember where i stashed the extra keys.

zedex, I think I got it—always have keys in your pocket. I almost always do except when I'm wearing sweats and then my wife is usually in the trailer. She almost never has her keys in a pocket—seems like women don't care for pockets so they have pocketbooks—so she should never follow me outside without picking up her keys.

Were some deadbolts only operated from the inside and don't have an outside key? Or is this whole thing about walking out without the key and accidentally turning the lever?

I can't imagine how I could hit the inside deadbolt lever while going out, but I have done other things which I had thought impossible by any person unless they were dumb, deranged or self destructive. I only admit to deranged.

Since I am the OP on this thread, I feel I need to say again, my problem was with the slide pin type of deadbolt as is pictured in post #60. The thing slid to the locked possition while we were driving down the road, or when we closed the door before driving. The cure for it is to either remove the pin, or introduce some friction to the slide as with Andy's "kit". A key won't fix the problem as this slide deadbolt is not key operated...you must find another way into the trailer if it malfunctions.

There are obviously other situations where a person could be locked out, such as lost/misplaced keys, unintentional locking, and actual malfunctions of the lock.

We had a situation once when the wife and I went on seperate outings, she returned before I, and I had the keys. (I might also say she was hungry, and needed to go to the bathroom, so it was a critical situation, and it was all my fault) She does not carry keys to the trailer, so for these situations, and any others that might arise, we have hidden a key to the trailer on the outside.

Hope this clears up some of the misunderstanding in the thread.

You and I have the same style lockset. My PO solved the deadbolt issue by drilling out a place for the db handle shaft to rest when you are not using the bolt. Kind of like a bolt-action rifle. See the pix attached.

But we remain with the problem of brushing the door lock as we exit the trailer. For this, I just keep a set of keys in my pocket whenever I leave the trailer, keep a set in the truck, and a set in a hide-a-key box.

Been lucky with that method (so far).

Thanks for further clearing up of what lock is what. I think this confusion has happened on other threads on the deadbolts. Finally, I understand what all this has been about.

Mine is the same as that pictured in #61. The slider for the regular, non-deadbolt lock could be hit on the way out though I think it's hard to do. Both locks have a key. Cool.

As a new A/S, this happened to me. However, months after buying my 2010 A/S, I found a spare key in my water heater compartment. I was sort of surprised that a key would be left there, but it came in handy two weeks ago when my nephew inadvertently locked us out.

We have a new 27' Flying Cloud and we seem to have a deadbolt problem of a different sort.

When closing the door from the outside, I can't engage the deadbolt using the dedicated key unless I REALLY slam the door and simultaneously turn the key. It usually takes several slams to engage the deadbolt. I've stopped trying to engage the deadbolt this way because I'm worried that I'll damage the mechanism and/or the door itself. The deadbolt has been like this since we took delivery.

I know I can take our AS back to the dealer for a fix, but it's a long trip and if there's an easy fix, I'd like try that approach first.

Any advice out there? I'd appreciate the help.

We had the same issue when we bought ours. I took the lock apart and it had no grease on the moving parts inside. I put some grease on it and it worked much better.

Just a cautionary tale regarding door locks and mechanisms.
This past week-end the wife and I were relaxing at lake pleasant az. I had just re-entered our 2005 22’ ccd after walking the dog. It was about 5:30am, Sunday morning. My plan was to go back to sleep. Silly me and my plans
Closing the door behind me I gave it the usual extra tug to make sure it was closed. Don't we all?
That’s when the inside door handle suddenly became suspiciously free-moving. I gave it a couple of test swings. Sure enough, the inside door handle had completely detached from the door latch mechanism.
The door was securely closed and no amount of pushing or wiggling the handle would cause it to open
Looking around for some tools I found the following was the full extent of available items – pic 1

[an aside: I keep a 50-pc tool set in the truck, just in case I get locked OUT of the trailer. My next purchase will be another set for INSIDE the trailer]
Using the very small Philips head screwdriver I managed to remove one of the 3 screws holding the inside coverplate. The other 2 screws were covered by the inside door lip – pic 2

Since the coverplate was not removable I had to pry it away from the body of the door to see inside. Pic 3 & pic 3a

I could now see where the inside door handle had disconnected from the mechanism. And by moving the sliding security lock I could see where I had to insert a tool to pop the latch.
Using the knife blade I managed to spring the mechanism, opening the door. Cue sigh of relief from myself and wife

The door latch still worked from the outside but I decided not to ‘key’ lock it. I did close and lock the lower independent dead-bolt. We drove home [ only 40 minutes away] very carefully.

Next up: installing a new door lock/panel set-up.

Yup. My inside handle is loose, and it is from having to slam the door and use extra effort to latch the door properly. If you visit my thread "wow, my door works great now" you can fix your door so it takes no effort to close . Glad you got it fixed up.
