Stainless Steel Atwood Water Heater Door
Quite a few years ago, I ordered a stainless steel water heater door for an Atwood water heater. I had polished a 1986 Sovereign and the door was a great addition. For the life of me, I can't remember where I ordered it. My son needs one for his Avion (I had an extra one for my Avion), since the stock ones are so flimsy & don't look nice at all. Can anyone refresh my mind? I think they were about $60 back about 5-8 years ago.

Hi Becky: Great question. I need one two. I have been known to rivet a sheet of aluminum to the stock steel door, but it just doesn't look that great, see photo. Polished stainless would be the way to go. I'm wondering if Atwood can stamp some out of stainless.

This is the way my cash-tight son is gonna have to go. I guess I'll haul out my buck riveter & some aluminum & help him out. I know I didn't pay over $100 for a door!

Sounds like a business opportunity. If I was younger and ....well, younger, I would make some of these in a local sheet metal shop and give these guys a little competition! But I'm not!
That is a ridiculous price!

I've the same reaction about the kitchen vent. Would like to replace that, the electrical cover, and heater. These all add up quickly.

Use “Chrome” paint over the white. Use 100 grit in a uniform vertical direction to give the stainless texture.

I went that route on a previous trailer but found the paint was too soft and scratched easily. This time I had the door powder coated.

How, or better said, where do you go to get a door powder coated?

Powder coating is a better option, but I would guess the cost to have it done wouldn't be that far off the price of a new door from VTS.
I have done a lot of powder coating parts swapping on motorcycles. The local guy was charging less for the parts we were doing in black compared to a custom color.

He actually has an aluminum cover (my old one), but it is tearing from the wind whipping it. I probably will reinforce it with aluminum & rivets if I can't find the cover I have for a reasonable amount of $

These lightweight alloy doors are designed to give little resistance in the event off unintended gas explosion. eg blows out.
A Stainless door helps to turn the above scenero onto a bomb event.
Nice and shinny up till then.
All Good

Sorry did I hear you say you'r hot water cylinder is ellectric, well in the event that your tank ruptured steam n hot water will take the least resistance.

Stainless Steel Upgrades are available from the Airstream store. Your local dealer can order them too, often for a better price without shipping.

There's two levels of customization.
There's a trim piece, which is just a flat piece of stainless to cover the door, about $65, and then there's the whole door, about $125.
I think this stuff is really nice, but it sure would add up!
I looked and my furnace came with a stainless cover installed!
To me, the ugly part is the outside shower, and it's $283!

They’re $123 at the Airstream store. That’s even more than Vintage Trailer Supply.

I think I have a stainless cover, I took it off my old atwood, when I replaced it with a suburban, it must be around somewhere. I will start looking.
