Securing Door While Traveling

A couple of years ago I saw on the forums a guy who had fashioned a small block of wood which fit into the exterior grab handle and lapped over the door to keep it secure while towing. I can't seem to find this anywhere on the forums now. I"m really tired of the old bungee cord across the door. Please help if you can thanks

I have a good pic of one that I found on the forums several years ago.
I made one and use it every time I pull my 68. Send me a PMwith you email and I'll send you a pic. I can't figure out how to post a pic here.

Locking door handle

Camping world has a great handle that has a three position base, which allows it to be used as an assist handle in the middle position, or flat against the door to secure the door in transit.

We just use a rubber door stop wedge slipped through the grab handle, drilled a hole in it and attached one of those little bungee cords with the red ball on it to keep it on the handle when camped. Works like post #3 above, always at hand.

I,too, am wondering about this. Does this mean the deadbolt isn't to be trusted on the road? Is this just extra security?

I made three of them while I was at it. Easy to enlarge the plan view photo to the right size on a copier. Cut it out of scrap plywood with a jig saw. Paint it as you choose.

I keep ours in the window as shown. It's in plain sight when you're closing the door. Of course, we also put it on our checklist.

Roadways can be rough, trailers flex, doors can come open no matter which way they swing. It's an extra precaution some of us use, not a requirement.

VTS backwards deadbolt

This shows how we think we have solved the issue with door coming open while on the road as well as securing the door from either inside or outside.
VTS has a deadbolt adapted with an extended bolt so that penetrations through frame or door are fairly small. It fits in the jamb rather than the door and since we had the interior skins off, it was reasonably easy to install but still not easy. We added a block of wood to the jamb to give it more substance.
I know the door exterior looks like hammered dog poop in this pic but it is much better now that we have made progress cleaning it up.

This must be more of a problem with older Airstreams.

My 2015 Airstream door fits tight as a drum and the dead bolt engages at least an inch into the main frame. There is no way that door would open accidentally on a rough road.

You just Murphy'd yourself. What can seem improbable or even impossible still has probable or possible within the words. Never say never and pray it never happens to you.

Murphy may bite you in other ways. The Airstream Gods are a fickle bunch.

Cheers

Thanks for the warning, luckily I'm not worried about Murphy in this case. If my door comes open due to a rough road when I have it bolted then I will have a lot more damage to worry about than just a suicide door.

Attached is a PDF with a scale drawing of the wood door lock block which you can use for a template. I intend to make one with 3/4" plywood. You may need to adjust for your particular installation. Easy to cut with a bandsaw, jigsaw or even good scrollsaw with the right blade.

I made several extra of these and have given some out at rallies. Hopefully those of you making your own, after all you'll have plenty of material left, and make them available as you camp. It's been several years since I posted that 'how too' article and since have noticed that many later Airstream models with doorway grips could adapt versions for their use. Just trace the shape to cardboard and trim to fit. My lock and 'travel' dead bolt should be adequate for my Trade Wind but this little piece of wood sure feels and looks very secure.
