Screen Door Crack

I found a crack in my screen door at the lower hinge. It is at the right angle in the metal and a few inches long. My plan is to pull the door and take it to a welding shop for repair. It looks like the best way to pull it is to drill out the 6 rivets in each hinge and leave the main door intact. How does this plan sound? The three rivets that are on the outside are flush on the backside and rounded like a buck or an olympic on the front, what are these?

Welding is probably your only option for the repair of the frame. Those rivets are most likely MS20470AX-X. these are a very soft rivets and the bucktail is filling a countersunk hole and then shaved flush for clearance issues. The X's stands for an unknown diameter and length.

Another example (result) of "lack of proper running gear balance".

Richard,

My vote is for Gracie! When she is interested in something outside she can lumber through the screen like it was not there. She is a great lab!

Years ago I found a shop in LA that did aluminum welding on the rig. Might be someone local that could do the same. Save pulling the door.

There are some cold welds out too. Rivet a patch?

Good Luck Friend,
John

Let's blame Gracie! I was going to install the new screen guards today when I discovered the crack. I think it has been there a while because the bottom hinge has had some play in it. I know I will have to remove the bottom hinge because the crack is under it. I will check with the welding shop close to where I work tomorrow and see what they say.

Now, where can I find those rivets I will need to put the door back on???

Hi, let's just call it old age and/or metal fatigue. And don't blame the poor dog, even if she really did do it.

Richard,

Check with jimmini. They use rivits in those big birds. Jim might have some in his flight bag. I have his business card w/phone numbers if you need them.
I do maint work at Cabot's museum tomorrow but will be home in early afternoon.

You can PM me with your address and I will mail you a variety pack of sizes. Most sellers won't sale by the rivet. Usually 1/4 pound bags is the smallest. I just purshased some and I think I paid around 12 dollars for a 1/2 pound bag. I get most of my hardware from here Genuine Aircraft Hardware Co.

Thanks so much!
I sent the PM.
I talked to the folks at the welding shop today. They charge $40 per hour and this should be a simple job. The door must be removed, I'll pull it tonight after work.....

This is a great story about the value of the forums....

Kip (Aerowood) PM's me yesterday about the rivits I will need and offers to send me some. Then he tells me he will be in Phoenix and can stop by my house if he has time.

I get a call this afternoon from him and he will be stopping by. I bail from work and meet him at my house. What a great guy, and he has rivits. He has several types and explains the proper way to install them. Thanks Kip!

He is now on his way to the airport to fly back to Denver tonight....

We also discussed what I found that caused the crack in the first place. The bottom hinge is not bent correctly. If you look at the picture on the right in the first post you will see that when closed the hinge will be pressed agaist the door frame. What is happening is the hinge is pressed against the frame and the door is still open about an inch or so. When you push the door closed the sreen door frame has to flex, that is where the crack comes from. The hinge on the top of the door is perfect. I will form (bend) the bottom hinge to match the top.

Sorry Gracie, it wasn't your fault!

Pulled the door today, it's off to the welding shop tomorrow.

The rivets Aerowood left me will fit nicely. I will use the ones with the dimple. I am not sure what number they are, bur Aerowood said they were the strongest.

I am also working on getting the angle of the hinge correct.

The dimple means it's an AD / 2117-T4 aluminum
