The door latch/lock on the newer Airstreams is what we call "bear claw", like the ones on later cars, starting in the late 60s.
We buy after market latches of this type for use on Street Rods to replace the old, and usually worn out, spring loaded latches used on old cars.
The ones we get are small, and will fit the thin door frames of Airstreams. That may very well be what they are using at the factory.
Electric actuators are also available which are thin enough to fit inside an Airstream door. These can be triggered by remote. You don't even have to run wires into the doors. Contacts are made that fit into the door jamb and "make" when the door is closed. These can be made to open and to lock/unlock using a remote. They also work with a handle and key.
There is some pretty slick stuff out there.
