Motorhome door latch -- HELP!

Hi - I am having a real hedache with our door latch. This is a 1992 Classic 350LE Motorhome. The outside latch is sprung and I don't know how to fix/relace it. In the meantime someone needs to be inside all the time (if the air is on) {I know - leave the air off but we are in SW Florida - need I say more} to open the door. Since we are full-time in this RV I really need help ASAP.

I have the inside exposed and can see that the name of the mechanism is Tri/mark.

There is a small/tiny silver pin which is located where the screw driver is pointing. We found this pin was laying on the ledge trapped in by the rest of the mechanism. We inserted and wedged and slide it back into place and now the latch is working! Eureka! Now the question is, how to we keep it from happening again?

Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.
