Hello, same problem, with an alternate solution (for now) that doesn't look too bad.

On the bottom hinge, the lower screw came out easily, but the upper screw only spun around freely because the nut must have come loose and then it corroded in place. So pulled the hinge away just enough to slip a hacksaw in between the hinge and doorframe and cut the screw. Then I removed the head-half, and pushed the other half inwards and let it fall inside the wall.

Then I took a 1/4" drill bit and drilled all the way through the interior wall, inserted 1/4" stainless steel screws (2-1/2" or 3", I forget), and then fastened them with acorn nuts while a friend applied a #3 Phillips screwdriver to prevent the screw from spinning. It seems to hold tight enough, so I'll stay with this conservative and not-too-ugly solution unless more radical surgery is needed.
