Exclamation Locked in...Yikes!

I found out the hard way that my "new" 1965 Caravel needs to have the exterior door knob replaced. I have a dead blot that works fine but the knob locks itself from the outside somehow. I tried not to get claustrophobic as I scrambled out the back window I've looked on line but can't find a place to buy a new knob..any help would be appreciated!

If you have $600 (plus shipping & handling) to spare, I believe that door lock is still available from Airstream.

$600 Ouch - Now that is what I call preposterous. For that price AS should be happy to come out and install it too, but to add insult to injury they charge shipping and handling on top of it........................

Solution - Have a locksmith rebuild you old lock and save a bundle!

Check you actual latch.

There have been several posts where a notch has been worn into the latch on the door. Slight presssure it will catch and not alow you to turn the knob. Exiting a out swing door it is normal to push on it a little as your turning the knob. From the outside you may not be pulling till you have fully turned the knob past that notch.

We had the same 'getting locked in' problem on our '64.

We went to a lock shop and ordered a Schlage 'Plymouth' passage set knob that looks very similar to the original Westlock passage set and has the same backset.

Works great...no more claustrophobic moments!

I had the knotch problem. When closed the door was under a good outward pressure from the gasket. While it was possible to push against the door hard enough from the outside to compress the gasket and get by the knotch it could not be done from the inside pulling on the handle. Had to be rescued and it took my wife and secretary pushing to free the door. I removed the latch plate on the trailer side. Nothing for the hasp to catch on.

The $600.00 lock does not and will not fit your 65 trailer door. That lock is for a 1970 to 1977 trailer "only."

With a little effort, you can modify the door to use the same lock that the 66 to 69 trailers used. They used the same cast metal door frame that you have.

It's called an "L-100 Special."

We carry them in inventory.

Our part number is 22224. You can see them on our web site.

Thanks Andy; I originally provided that misinformation

I would now like to think my goof made $134.95 sound a whole lot better

While it is still rather high for a door lock, I can see myself paying it if my '67 Overlander should need a new door lock.

So you installed this passage set and it worked? If it's a passage set it has no lock..not that that would ,atter b/c I still have the deadbolt. I looked on line and can't find any pictures of the Plymouth model, there are about 6 listed. I did see the one from Inland and it looked perfect and I think I'd be willing to pay the $100 but there was mention of adjustments or modifications. I don't know what that means or how to do that.

Here's a link to the Schlage website that shows the "Plymoth" knob we used. Of course, ours is not brass it's the US26 finish (silver). We also have a separate deadbolt so we didn't need this knob to lock. However, it's offered in locking versions as well.

We recently customized a high quality deadbolt to fit a local Airstream. The backset was fine when installed in the jamb side, however we replaced the "throwbolt" with a 3/4" round hardened steel bolt to prevent having to remove too much door frame material.

I liked it so much I'm doing one for my own '72 Overlander and will share pics with you if there's any interest. In this case, the deadbolt was "keyed both sides" so a key is required to lock from inside and to exit. I'm a little uncomfortable about the possibility of someone removeing the key once inside and having to exit in an emergency.

Is there any way to replace the keyed piece with a lever?
