There is a small screw at the bottom of the interior handle.

There is also a small screw in the edge of the door.

There are 3 screws on the inside that also must be removed.

Then, a few rivets around the lock, on the inside, must be removed so that the metal can be flexed which allows the lock to be removed.

The handle shaft on the inside, won't go thru the opening, unless that metal is slightly pulled away.

If your door lock (handle) looks like this. There is a screw on the bottom of the inside handle to remove said handle. There are 3 screws thru the inside skin of the door and one screw on the door flange near the bolt. Some say you must loosen the inner skin of the door to remove the handle but I have not found that to be the case.

My lock looks exactly like that (1976 Globetrotter)

I tried removing it today but it didn't want to come out - what Andy said is right - the long post that the handle attaches too is hanging up.

Any suggestions on getting it out w/out doing any serious damage?

Also, reason I'm pulling it out - previous owner may have painted the lock chrome and it's peeling off.

While on the subject, what are your suggestions for re-finishing? Was thinking aluminum color rustoleum but am open to other suggestions. Would be nice if I could get it out because I can than take it to my sand blaster or soda blast the chrome off of it.

I have removed the handle and found Andy to be correct. Not very hard. However take care your handle and how it's work on it once you have it removed, the casting is pot metal and thin around the edge. I now get to live with a minor stress line where it indents for the hand.

Saw that Andy - thanks.

What is your suggestion for re-painting the chrome that peeled off? Was the chrome OEM? Also the pin that holds the latch is rusted - just cosmetic but if I bet getting it out and replaced is probably not worth the chance of screwing up the mechanism which I see is quite $$$.

The chrome look was OEM.
