Handicapped door

I need to fabricate a wheel chair/handicapped door for my trailer. Has anyone done this? I can handle the ramp...but I need a wider door. I realize this is somewhat major modifications to the side wall, But I feel it is actually simple. Take the door out and make it wider...frame it so it is structurally sound and fabricate a new door.

I am hoping someone has already done this and can point me in the right direction

Ideas?

THX

Larry

I would sugest that you contact airstream about this.
There are ribs on both sides of the door.
As I can see it you only could gain 2 inch without cutting in the ribs.
Is it not an option to fabricate a narow wheel chair just to get around in the trailer

One handycapped person in our local made a elevator from aluminum and a toungue jack which he slipped into a receiver welded to the frame of the trailer under the door. He used crutches once he got thru the door. His wife would bring the powered scooter back down and dismantle it and store in the truck of the car. He had a specially equipped car so he could drive.

Another member used a very skinny scooter or chair and a ramp to get her into the trailer. The high stress of the contact points of the ramp on the door bottom caused cracks in the aluminum frame. I think they rewelded it before they sold the trailer. They had a van that used the same ramp so she could roll in and have the chair locked down for travel.

Is it possible to get more information about this "elevator"? I would really appreciate it.

I was looking into this last year. I was going to use a scooter carrier for the elevator. This wis already wired for 12 volts & will go up & down with a great enough weight capacity. I wanted to leave it on most of the time as I have classic MH. thr frame could have held the extra weight. It would have made the MH too wide for travel so I abandoned the idea. Maybe this can start your search.

The member who had made the elevator has since died, but his wife remains active in the club and her son has an e-mail address. They still have the trailer and the elevator in Illinois. If you PM me, I can see if they are willing to share with you.
