Front door handle options

First, sorry for a million questions on this sub.

My 76 Overlander came with someone’s crappy modded standard doorknob. In order to pin the door back against the shell using the door clip, the door looks like it needs a handle that is flush. Are there any aftermarket products that fit this door? I’m seeing stuff like a Bauer door latch that comes in chrome but I’m not sure if this or anything else out there works?

Have you tried calling Airstream to find what replacement can be used? They will give you the part number which you will have to get through a dealer.

Yeah, they want $750 for a replacement. Absurd. If anyone has any recommendations for a compatible 3rd part option that isn't a doorknob, I'd be much obliged!

Can you post a pic of what you have. As far as I know you should have a KT lock assembly in your coach.
You are correct that a replacement lock is $750.
A PO must have modified your door. Post a pic to show how bad/good job they did.
The old lock isn't by chance in the coach somewhere?

I wish the old lock was in the trailer! Here's some photos. As you can see, I took the plates off in order to have the broken door cylinder area welded, and will be cutting a new hole for the replacement. I spoke to one of the guys Out of Doors Mart who said I might be able to mod the door to accommodate the handle seen here: http://odmrv.com/catalog/index.php?m...oducts_id=1035

Anyways, on to my door.

That's quite a butcher job.
Inland RV use to sell a kit to replace the original KT lock.
I would bet with a little "red neck" engineering you could make plates like the PO did and install a lock assembly like the new trailers have.
Was the bolt pocket modified as well?

Definitely a butcher job. Fortunately I don’t see too much idiotic modifications beyond the door and screen. My hope is I can put a new aluminum plate over both sides, and modify it to have a Keeler lock. I’m not so sure how well it’ll work though. :/

If I’m understanding the term bolt pocket, then yeah I think it has been modified.

You are not alone. We have a similar problem lock from a different butcher on our 1988 Excella. Ours is still working (barely) and we are a little concerned about taking it apart until we have a solution. There are a couple locks on Ebay that are new "old stock" or "rebuilt" by a locksmith. Good luck and let us know what you finally do with yours.

My wife has a replacement lock Inland RV we did not use it as our rv guy rebuilt ours for her 1961 overlander. It cost about $230 dollars. Pm me if you want to discuss a purchase.
Thanks

I’m not sure if a 1961 would be compatible without modding and it’s still more than I want to spend on a handle (trying to stay within a budget). Thank you though!

A '61 door handle is nothing like the '70's units.
As far as I know the KT locks were used only in the '70's.

Yeah I’m thinking I’m just gonna try my luck with the KLR Kit from Out of Doors. It’s the kit seen here: http://odmrv.com/catalog/index.php?m...oducts_id=1035

I’m gonna pray I can make this thing work without having to butcher the door too much more.

I think you can make it work. Pay close attention to the dimensions they provide.
Just have to make the plates big enough to cover the old hole.
Good Luck!

this is what she bought to replace the door handle with. It is on sale now for 195$ and will require door modification which is why we chose not to use it.

They have something very similar at Out of Doors for $60-ish.
