Front Door Handle Broken

Just picked up my "new" 1959 airstream overlander and love it. was amazed how easily it towed. Anyway, one thing I noticed right off hand was that the front outside door handle is broken and the key hole is all mangled. the door latch is still functional but having to put it in a storage lot I will be worried once its fixed up that anyone can open the door and go inside.

Can a fella still find the door handle assembly? if so, where and what would I have to pay for it?

thanks.

Many owners upgrade the lock to a newer style that was used from 66 to 69, but is still available today.

You can even get a kit, that changes out what you have.

If you wish to keep the lock original, you maybe looking for parts for a while.

Try this guy. What you need is a L-66, and this guy found one. It's a bit crusty and may need to be cleaned up. If you find one cleaned up it will be beaucoup bucks.

mmhh, maybe I have a 1960

Thanks for the posts. if I have to I will upgrade to the 66 handle from inland, I looked at the pics from the used handle. it appears the outside handle is horizontal while mine is vertical ?

also, the title says 1959 but it has the 7 segment caps. didnt the 1950's have many more ? it does have twin leaf spring axles so from my limited knowledge being a new airstreamer....it must be older than 61, right? what year did they start going to 7 segment caps?

Yeah, the handle doesn't look exactly like mine either. Mine has the tumbler in top of the handle.
Probably wouldn't work, and it's in pretty bad shape.

Exactly the same

Yes, my door handle looks exactly like yours. mine is shiney too. its too bad the handle is cracked right in the middle. I do not have the round tumbler lock that you have above your door handle, I just the key lock which is integrated into the handle. The door handle still works. wonder if it can be repaired and rechromed? also wondering if a locksmith can simply remove and replace the lock because other than seeing the crack in the handle and the lock being bad. the door latch works great and the handle is in otherwise good condition.

I believe the key and tumbler are same as some old Ford or Studebaker. You will need to climb on the wayback machine and go way back through the forums, maybe three or four years back. I know the info is there.

Better yet, have a search contest among the forum search wizards.

Also, someone took a piece of rod and milled it to match the front of the handle. Good fix for a broken handle.

I just bought a replacement lock from Vintage Trailer supply. The latch works fine despite only having half the handle. Sure would be nice if someone sold replacements, but I've read these are quite hard to find.

Well skittles you can't get the handle anymore but you can get a new lock tumbler. L-77 Lock Cylinder I replaced mine in about 20 min. Works great!
