Door Screen Replacement on '58 Overlander

Hi,

My front entry door has a huge hole in the screen. I swung the screen door open and had a look at the entry door to see how to replace the screen. I sure can't see any way to install a new screen. Does the whole door skin have to be removed? How does the installer keep the screen under sufficient tension and keep it square? Is there a thread posted somewhere or a technical FAQ on someone's website that I can be directed to for help?

Here is a pic: (clicking the link will load the full size version - 1.9meg)

Thanks,

Steve

From the outside, there are aluminum strips top and bottom held by screws. Remove the screws, take out the aluminum angle strips, and the entire screen and frame comes out. It is a regular aluminum frame and rubber spline.

Did you get the CD with the CAD drawings yet?

My screen was in normal screen frame.Would be replaced same as house screen.Open small door and look from outside. There should be an angle at top and bottom of opening ,attatched with two screws each, that holds screen.

Steve,

On further inspection, I can't see how you open the 'door-in-a-door'. On my door, there are two latches on the inside that hold the inner door closed. They don't appear in your picture.

These pictures are sideways.

They are the two blot style latches on the older doors.

Lack of Confidence

OK you guys, thanks for thinking that I'm not smart enough to have looked for a way to remove the screen.

My screen door is latched shut by the two sliding bolts on the left side of the door, one at the top, and the other at the bottom.

Here are 6 thumbnails and click throughs to full size pics of the exterior side and interior side of the door.

As you can see, there are no angle pieces that are screwed to the inside of the door frame to hold the screen in place. I do not see any removable pieces anywhere on the door. All I see are Aircraft rivets on the exterior and pop rivets on the interior.

So, does anyone have a suggestion as to how my screen gets replaced, other than to tear the whole interior skin off?

Steve

Photos always the best way to show problem.I guess the older door is different.Looks like you will have to drill out pop rivets to replace screen.

I think your door was a design prototype.

Oh YAAAAy, that sure isn't what I wanted to hear.

I've been thinking about this problem pretty much all day. I think what I will do is cut out the old screen, weld up an 18 or 20 ga flat aluminum frame and mount those cantilever house screen holders on it so that I can mount the screen from the interior side of the door.

I can't put anything between the hatch and the door or it will prevent the hatch from latching properly.
