Door Lock Snapped Off

Hello all, I hope that someone can help.

I have 1 72' Trade Wind and the inside pin/lever that locks the door from the inside has broken off.

Any suggestions on how to fix this without taking the mechanism out?

My mother-in-law is visiting in about 4 weeks and I would like to get this fixed before she comes since she stays in the trailer when she visits.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Any repair will require removing the mechanism. your choice then becomes repairing the lock you have, finding a good used one, or getting one of inland's "kits" to replace the lock.

A local locksmith might be able to repair the lock for you. I'd try to find someone over 50.

Next day repair is available.

If we recive a KT lock, next day air, we call the customer to let them know what the repairs would cost.

If approved, the repaired lock go back to the customer, the same day, shipped next day air.

If you shipped it that way on a Monday, you would have it back on Wednesday.

48 hours cross country, is pretty quick.

lock parts

The entrance door lock that Airstream used from 1970 thruough 1977, is a very special lock made for them.

Repair parts for them are not available from anyone, except an Airstream dealer.

I didn't know you could repair the lock in question. I assumed it was a replacement with modification required to the trailer (as is the case with the motorhome locks).

None the less, depending on the nature of the failure, a resourceful locksmith might be able to make a repair without having specific parts.

Not sure if I am misunderstood

I may not have been clear...

The outside lock (using the key) and the door handle (both inside and out) work correctly.

My problem is that the little lever on the inside that you push up and down to lock and unlock snapped off. Thus, I cannot lock the door from the inside.

Is this lever screwed into the mechanism? Can I get a tap in there and reverse it out and use a bolt of the same size? It is too deep to get needlenose pliers in there.

I am worried about doing any type of drilling since the mechanism seems to be poorly fabricated in the first place.

If anyone wants some pictures let me know and I will add some.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve.

The pin that is screwed into the vertical locking shaft has broken.

In order to properly repair it, the lock "must" be removed from the door.

After the lock has been removed, a part of the vertical lock shaft can be seen. If the pin broke off flush, then removing the screw, at the end of the lock closest to the striker bolt,
carefully catching the steel ball and spring that will fall out, may allow the vertical locking shaft to fall out.

If not, then the part of the pin may have to be ground off.

At best, you probably will need a vertical shaft and locking pin.

A very few Airstream dealers stock those parts.

CAUTION: Take a deep breath when you ask for the price on any KT lock parts. Those parts are only available from a few Airstream dealers.

A new KT lock, Airstreams price, is past $500.00, so don't break what you have.

Is the striker bolt OK? If it has a groove worn in it, you should also replace it, as it can and will at some point, lock you out of the trailer.

Locksmiths usually are a waste of time, if you try to have one repair that lock. Also, since that lock is totally foreign to them, many times they break something else, that creates even more problems.

Again, if you take that lock apart, watch for that small steel ball and spring.

If you lose either one of them, you will wish you never heard of a KT lock.

That little pin is no exception. About $40 comes to mind. but if you can get the old one out it is a standard size and thread and a 10 cent hardware store bolt will fit.
