Door Lock mystery knob

Hi,
Newbie question: I have a '71 Ambassador. The door lock mechanism has a little knurled knob that I cannot make do anything. What is it?
Thanks,
Manning

ps. I'm working on how to post the pic.

It is the door lock. It slides up and down.

Hi,
Thanks for the info, but there is no slot in the inner wall of the door to allow any "sliding" either side to side or up and down. The hole in the door that it protrudes through is round and fairly tight to the shape of the little knob. I can twist it, but it just unscrews.

Although the hole is round, it IS big enough to allow the knob to move up and down.
Thanks very much, we've had Lucy for four months and I did not know how to lock that door!!

Because I have a character flaw that requires me to always have some inconsequential project to accomplish, I made a new lock shaft.

Having access to a lathe I turned a shaft with an actual knob on the working end and threaded the shaft to fit the lock mechanism.
A normal person might just go to the hardware store and pick up an 1-1/4 inch long bolt of the correct size to screw into lock. It makes locking the door so much easier. Just a note; the shaft the bolt threads into likes to twist so watch your angle when turning in the new part.

Good Luck,
Tom

Hi Tom,
One of my most noticable flaws (the count of flaws is innumerable) is that I disassemble stuff that I don't understand. Much like a 5 year old, I cannot always reassemble the item in question.
Back on point, with you guy's help I now see that the door work perfectly.
Thanks,
Manning
