What you need is a KT lock, it is made from Unobtainium.

Part #: 22200
Lock kit. Includes instructions and replaces KT lock used from 1973 to 1977. See photo to view the parts in the kit.
From Inland RV web site, this is a replacement for the original KT lock, a new KT price above $500 from Airstream and their dealers, (ouch!) The old KT is rebuildable except for the body of the lock.

I have the above pictured lock kit that claims it "replaces KT locks from '73 to '77. "
This "replacement" does not fit where the old one went. It's not actually a replacement, but instead is an entirely different lock of larger proportions that does not fit at all.
You have to customize your door and its frame to accommodate this lock.
So.. How does one cut bigger holes in the door? Tin snips? I have no idea how to do that. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks

Perhaps the instructions are not clear. Most DIY have no problems installing that lock as a "replacement."
We have sold hundreds of those kits, without any problems.
No one ever said that it was a direct swap out.
The idea is to save a person several hundreds of dollars, and get them into a lock, that if it failed, would not cost a small fortune to replace as the KT lock does.
Airstream does not wish to come up with a reasonable answer to the KT lock, so we decided to do so ourselves. We picked a lock that also has a dead bolt, which the KT lock does not have.
Not fitting or not working, is usually related to instructions not being understood, or the installer, or perhaps lack of proper tools.

It will fit, but it will not work, since the striker bolt is almost one inch short.

Hi Andy. I am just trying to find out what to use to cut the door and frame without it looking awful as tin snips would make it look. If I asked without explaining the replacement does not really fit in the old hole, people could have been confused. Since you know it does not fit, you were apparently confused as to why I would mention that. Sorry. Anyway what do I cut it with?

The hole is cut with tin snips, but carefully, or if you wish a Dremel tool, or a high speed air drill with a small router bit.
The hole that you cut will be covered by the plate.
That being the case, if the cut hole looks ugly, who cares, since it will be hidden.
Please refer to the instructions, or call us for further instructions.

Some owners have done a similiar install using the Bargman L-300 lock. You make your cover plate, modify the door frame hole as needed.
I am in the midst of doing this myself, but not yet completed.

The L-300 is a good lock, but it does not have the dead bolt feature.
The L-300 is also a good lock to use on Airstream and Argosy motorhomes.
We even got Airstream to own up to that fact, to the point that they now recommend it.
But once again, the entrance door must be slightly modified.

The above pictured lock kit was installed on our recently purchased '83 Excella several years ago by the PO. It looks good and works great.

Thanks Andy. I will use my tin snips and get to carefully installing that lock later this afternoon. It's definitely a better lock than the original that is sold at 2x the price and (presumably) would have the same fail rate as the original failed one.

Thanks from me too Andy. My Excella has a seperate dead bolt so I hope to use the L300 in addition, to replace the horrible mess of a lock and handle the p.o. put on.

Most Airstream dealers sell replacement parts for the KT lock.
The problem is two fold.
1. Your repairing a lock that is at least 30 years old, that has a known "wear" pattern.
2. The cost of some of those parts, exceeds the cost or a replacemnt lock kit.
However, if one disregards the cost of parts, then repairing a KT lock would certainly be the order of the day.
The slide bolt, or striker bolt, is half the cost of a kit replacement lock, alone. The tumbler for the original lock, is no longer available from Airstream. We have had some modified that serve the purpose. Airstream's KT lock current tumbler only fits the casting that they presently offer for sale.
And it's getting worse.

Andy, I have just removed my lock (from a 74 Land Yacht) and am looking for a replacement. What you sell looks like what I need. I noticed that the bolt is offset on mine, somewhat lower than centre whereas the one pictured above seems to be right on centre. I am in Ontarioi, Canada, can I purchase the above lock and have it shipped here? And how would I go about it?

helpful threads
There are a few threads that address the installation of Andy's new lock. You can find them by going to the Forums listing from the Portal. You then scroll down to the subforum "Doors and Locks". One thread that I contributed to is "1970-1977 Main Door Lock", there are others with good info as well.
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f453...lock-9196.html
I put Andy's lock in over a year ago and am very happy with it. The installation takes some time and care to do correctly, but the lock is much more solid than the original.

Thank-you Andy and Laird for your replies. I checked your site Andy and although the lock is much cheaper than the Airstream one, it is still quite pricey compared to what I can buy locally....that is if I can find one that I can use...that will accommodate the screen door. If not I'll be contacting Inland.

I'd be interested in hearing about what you can find locally - as I'm not located that far from you and the lock on my '74 Sovereign also has some issues. I haven't looked at it closely enough to see what needs to be fixed. You may already be aware of this, but if you decide to order the lock from Andy try to have it shipped through the post office, as the courier companies often charge exorbitant brokerage fees.
