Door Lock

The door Opening/Locking mechanism on my 1987 failed. Airstream told me they could fix it for around $800.00 and stated "it wouldn't be pretty". This being completely out of the question, I contacted Andy at Inland RV. With his help I was able to fix the problem for less than $175. If anyone would like to see pictures or has questions let me know.

Door Lock

I have a 1982 Airstream Classic Motor Coach that needs the door lock replaced. Can you send me pictures and information on what he did to get yours fixed.

Thanks,

Rodger

I fixed the lock on my 82 MH for ten bucks. The tumbler failed, a common failure...it cracked and spun in the cylinder. This part is still available and can easily be replaced, although the key will thn chnage as well. Mine has worked well now for three years.
If you search the old threads here there is at least one on this topic.

Door Lock

My whole mechanism seems to be bad. I stopped by an RV Store and all the replacement fittings where the wrong size. I would like to put in an electronic latching system with manual key access like some of the newer Classic models. Does anybody know much about that system?

A Bargman L-300 lock works great in your Motorhome door.

It does take some fitting and trimming, but works great.

Even the factory says it works.

Question Square lock / Rectangular hole

I saw a bargman l-300 and it was 5" x 5" square. The hole in the door is 4" X 6". Unless the door is reskined there will be a 1" x 4" peep hole left. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

The door, must be plated.

If not, then there isn't a lock that will cover the hole, "AND" be approved for motorhome use.

Anyone have a picture of their exterior door latch on a '69? When we bought our '69 Safari, the entire exterior lockset was missing. I ordered a new one and strike plate. The lockset fits fine. However, the strike plate looks like it is mortised into the door frame. I have no hole in the door frame. So, I'm wondering if there is something else missing? The hole pattern on the door frame matches the hole pattern in the strike plate.

Thought?

Terry.

Thanks for the photo's.

Your trailer is a 69, however, the door jamb is from a 70 to 72, which requires a different stricker pocket.

We have tried calling you, but no one answers.

Call us asap, and we will ship the correct striker pocket to you, post haste.

Andy

This is what I did when mine failed. Had to plate under the lock to cover any gaps.

...also put in a deadbolt for extra security. I felt that the RV lock was too flimsy. Now I don't mind leaving the MH alone for an extended amount of time. Now, the windows are a different story!
