Door Latch Broken

This is not the usual problem since I cannot find anyone else on the forums with it.
We have a two year old 2008 Safari SE and just returned from a week of camping. We had just parked it at our house to unload and I unlocked the door (deadbolt and latch) and opened the door . . . and the striker bar for the main door latch fell off on the floor. This is the bolt-looking thing that the main door latch mechanism engages.

Now for the really bad part - whatever it screws into had fallen off inside the door frame. There is a hole in the door frame about 3/4 inch in diameter with nothing there. I heard a metallic thunk inside the door frame as the inside part fell down. I tried fishing for that with a magnetic grabber but couldn't get hold of anything

I removed the metal strip around the door frame but behind it was the aluminum inner skin which is riveted to the door frame.

What do I do? Must I remove two dozen rivets to pull the door frame out? Is there something I could stick in the hole to bolt the striker bar to?

Meanwhile, the deadbolt is keeping my trailer secure, but the door rattles and does not make the nice tight seal on the gasket that the regular latch does. I hate to tow anywhere with it in this condition.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Can you remove the corner of the interior skin to get at the piece that has fallen?

Not without removing a number of rivets. I think I may be stuck. Or just in need of a can opener!

Hi, I'm thinking that if that happened to me that I wouldn't want to remove more than necessary. I would use a hole saw and drill a one inch hole near the bottom to retrieve the nut plate and drill another one inch hole in line with the striker plate hole, to get it back together. Then I would buy a couple of hole plugs to fit the two holes. I would buy the plugs first, so that you would know what size hole saw to use.

Without any other option, I removed the closeout strip alongside the door frame and drilled out several holes making a slot that I could just reach in. Got a nut and lockwasher inside the doorframe on the threads of the striker bar and tightened the heck out of it. The closeout strip neatly covered the hole. And the loose nutplate is still somewhere behind the wall, but who cares. Case closed.
