Door key turns but doesn't lock

Hi everyone, this is my first post!
I just bought my Airstream today and will be picking it up tomorrow! It's in darn good shape except for a few little things, including the front (side) door lock. The key turns but it doesnt have any effect. I don't know if I should try my hand at taking the lock out and seeing if I can buy a new cylinder from the locksmith or what to do, but it definitely needs to lock. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Most of the parts for the lock are available from Out of Doors Mart. When I was looking for a lock cylinder my local locksmith could not get anything to replace it. At Out of Doors Mart also has a schematic of the lock with all the parts. Airstream Lock 1970-77

It looks harder than it really is. If you can get the lock off just look to see if something looks amiss. When taking the lock off the door make sure you push the bolt in as you remove the lock off the door. The PO removed mine and broke the outer face of the lock. It isn't hard but that little mistake messed up my lock. I am letting you know about the bolt because anyone who hasn't removed one could do the same mistake.

not hard at all, really. if you can get the lockset out of the door, you could also hand it off to your locksmith for the repair, and reinstall it yourself, or pay them for that, too.

for that matter, there's probably a dozen or more members here that would make the repair for you for free, if you wanted to cover the postage to send the parts!

obtw, buying an older Airstream virtually means that if you weren't handy before, you're about to learn!

best wishes for you and the new trailer. you'll do fine! lots of good information & support can be found here.

door lock

Try the easiest thing first. On mine the key must be turned one full turn

On mine the key only has to be turned 1/2 turn, but the teeth on the key always have to be pointing towards the read of the trailer. If I rotate the key with the teeth facing towards the front, the door will not unlock or lock.

Well I fiddled with it a little today and it seemed to be working for a few minutes. I'm going to try and get it off tomorrow though to see if a spring is broke or something like that. With the Airstreams, are the locks supposed to continue to rotate when you turn the key, instead of just going so far befor you turn it back (like a normal lock) or is mine definitely broken (it just goes 'round and 'round)

They do go round and round. Do you have an inside lock lever? If that is missing then that shaft will spin and the lockset wont engage. Its a very weird design but very simple at the same time. I just went through this door handle mess two days ago. One word of caution is to treat that door handle like a princess because she is VERY expensive to replace.
