Door Issue

We just purchased a 1970 27' overlander. Previous owners had failed to shut the door during transport and it had flung open damaging the interior shell( All bent almost in half midway). After removing the shell I also noticed cracks in two area's of the frame. The door as is does close but does not seal properly at the top or the bottom.The cast iron hinges are also cracked but still work. Does any one know where we can look for a door and hinge set, or shall we pursue welders and repair on the existing door??

On the top of the page is a blue toolbar, try the search function with different phrases such as "door damage" or "door hinge", etc. You may find posts or threads with a model such as yours.

I do know that bent doors and such are a difficult at best issue to solve.. If the door does not seal properly, you will have water leaks, which will rot your floor eventually... the hinges may or may not be available. Try InlandRV.com or VintageTrailerSupply.com for parts. You may need to repair what you have.

I would take some digital photos and post them in this thread... click the go advanced button after your key your questions, statements, and you can upload your photos. The pictures are really worth a thousand words here. People can respond much easier.

You can't weld the cast iron hinges, they need to be replaced.

THe alum frame that has cracks can be welded.

That is the reason no matter what we alway's bungie cord our door when we are traveling. The past owner had problems with the door before and it looks like our door was replaced once.

Welcome to the forums. I am very sorry to hear about the the mishap with your new Airstream. Rest assured that others here have had the same problem and help is on the way. I was able to return the original shape to me door by using a homemade jig and a com-along but yours sounds like more damage than just being sprung.

you can also try cherokee Rv salvage in colorado ,they do get airstreams in
from time to time ,had a couple in, a few months back .

Thank you for all the responses, I will be calling a few places for the hinges, and as to the door I have found a guy here in town that does aluminium welding. I will probably try the 2X4 in the door jam to get things straightened out as well. Will keep every one posted as to the results.
