Door Handle for '50s

The po of our flying cloud was nice enough to save the original refridgerator style door handle. He presented it to me in a paper bag when we picked up our trailer. I was pretty excited because I knew they were hard to find. He said that he could never figure out how it worked...neither can I !!!
The handle is broken off with a clean break which I've read that they had breaking issues with these...probably why they quit using them and are no longer available.
My question is has anyone had any luck repairing these? Should it be soldered? Also...even if the handle is repaired I can't figure out how the mechanism works.

You can't solder them, but here is what Rod Schultz did:

I really appreciate the links!! Rod's idea is great. His handle is a little different than ours...must be a newer model.
While looking through those old threads I did find the source for reproductions of the early 50's fridge style handles and bezels. This source was also listed on RJ's site. jenkins1924@hotmail.com He has some bezels in stock and handles coming in soon. They are cast off of the old parts in higher quality materials. It is my understanding that the originals were cast of pot metal and had a tendency to break. The handles and bezels are $150 each...not cheap but if you want the original they are available. He will email you pics so that you can make sure it's the right one.
Thanks, Lyn
