Convert vintage door latch to modern double rotary latch & strike?

Soooo.... I've asked this question a couple times within the past couple years, and never received any input. I'm still not to this point yet, BUT I'm VERY close!

Of course the old 70's KT lock is notorious for failure, and although still obtainable, they are super expensive, AND my door has been butchered by the PO anyway.

My original thought was to rebuild the door and reskin the door so that I could cut the appropriate opening and strike plate to replace with the readily available FASTEC style assembly like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-RV-En...-/301814268687

That said, its still the "old" style latch.

Wondering if the modern style double rotary latch with Bolt style striker are more desirable, reliable, and worthy of the extra effort?

I originally thought I'd have to go sit down at a dealer parts counter to try and figure out what parts I'd need to do this, but I just found everything on Airstreamsupply.com - Here's the parts:

I have to rebuild my door anyway because of the mess that was made from the PO cutting everything up to put a household knob on after the old KT mustve died. So I have a blank slate.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas welcomed. Is this a worthy upgrade? OR unnecessary time & expense?

Im going to assume the 2008+ doors are same thickness as the vintage 70s.

If thats the case... I think Im going to try and do this. Its not a cheap gamble- was "hoping" someone else out there had some input.

I'm curious as well. Has anyone just called a lock smith and told them to replace the cylinder? What's worse case scenario?

I've tried a similar lock setup from your eBay link. Mine was same shape but the interior lever/dead bolt knob was black plastic.
It would work with slight mod to skin and jamb. Plunger needs to be longer but figured I could space out striker plate. What ultimately got me was the interference with the screen door... Not allowing you to operate door latch from inside.

Back to drawing board.

MIXTER, any updates to this thread. Outofdoorsmart has good prices and maybe if the whole latch was purchased as a complete part it would be cheaper than parting out.
