Broken Interior Door Latch Handle!!!

The interior door latch handle on our 89 Excella was broke this mourning due to closing the door a little too hard. The wind here in Vegas is making excellent kite weather. The mechanism is in perfect working condition but this small pair of vice scrip’s attached to the shaft is going to be totally unacceptable by the wife. Is this part still available? It kind of looks like a door latch that is used on other makes of trailers. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Don

Don,
check out the trimark corporation web site and see if they sell your style of lock.

Don, There are a few boneyards around from which you might be able to procur one. There's one in N Central FL, another in Carthage, Missouri. Also, Walts Trailer Sales, I think Ocala, FL has many Airstream related parts. What about the factory. They handle many things that old. Maybe one of these helps.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks for all the help. I am checking on all given information and will check back with the results in a week or so. This one will probably have to wait until we get back to our base.
I'm having too much fun here in Vegas now!

Don

Don, This comes from Trailer Life magizine, Jan 2006. Even though it is geared at trailering in general, it is a fine magizine, and trailering is more important than just Airstreams for me- Airstreams are what I have chosen to do my trailering/traveling in! Good luck in your search!

Any pics? I had (have) a problem with mine; if it's the same one I have, we're all in trouble, but I can post a pic on how I fixed mine (sorta).

We, too, fixed ours with some ingenuity and skills and lots of persistence. Will take some pics and write out a description as best we can to post later.

Thumbs up repaired inside door lock handle

Inside door handle broke! After looking for a replacement without success, I just made one. Started with the closest-matching parts possible, then put it together.
Used an S&K 3/8" drive x 1/2" (six point) socket. This socket has a groove around it for the "C" retainer clip from original lock. It is very close to the inside diameter of the hole in the cover plate.
Used a 5/16" hex cap screw and nut.
Used 1 piece of 1/8" steel flat stock cut to the handle size.
Now the fun part! Putting it together!
Drill hole in the flat stock handle. Assemble cap screw and nut on handle, place nut in socket. Important note: check for rotation of 3/8" socket to the square shank inside door lock!
Then braze weld the parts together. You will by now have noticed the square shank in the lock is 5/16", a tad smaller than 3/8" socket. This is made up with stainless steel shims or steel sheet metal made to fit.
Final looks are up to you. Paint, rubber handle grip material, vinyl tape, or as we've chosen, just live with it. It works fine.-Mike & Alicia
