Bargman L300

I replaced the missing door lock assembly on my 1982 Excella with a Bargman L300. I had to recut the hole in the outer skin (the original was real rough cut) because the Bargman was wider and not as tall as the original. Also the Bargman comes with a new striker plat with slots to accept the two sholder bolts that come with the new lock. This is the new DOT standard I guess? I had to cut two grooves in the jam to allow the bolt heads room to engage the slots in the striker plate. I did all my cutting with a die grinder and a cut off blade. After fitting the lock I made a trim plate out of a piece of scrap to cover the old hole that showed at the top. I used 1/4 inch high strenght pop rivets to hold the striker plate in place and 1/8 inch rivets to hold the trim piece on. I will try to post some pic's if I can borrow a camera from someone.

The L-300 is a lock designed for motor home use, not travel trailers.

I am getting ready to do this install on my 80 Excella, a Bargman L-300 lock to replace the silly handle that the P.O. put in . I stumbled across a great link with directions for a similar job although not the same lock assembly the idea is right... Thanks to those whop posted this

1975 Airstream Door Lock Replacement

My questions will come when I pull off the lock asembly on there now and see what I find inside the door, hopefully it will all come together. I am off now to buy the aluminum sheet for the covering portion.

It seems with so many of the AS items no longer being built, the trailer itself is the only thing not "orphaned." I know that AS uses parts from other suppliers, but it seems building the best travel trailer in the world, they would use the best materials and products to be found. JM2CW

Please be advised that the L-300 lock will give you some grief when you try to install it in a trailer door.

That is not the lock kit that we suggest as a substitute for the trailers, because of the changes you will need to make to the door.

Please let us know how you did with it.

Is the L300 used on a 1984 Motor Home. I need a new Inside Plate. Can I just purchase the Inside Plate or do I have to purchase the whole assembly? I assume it is still available from the dealer. Any idea what the cost is for either the plate or the assembly?

The problem isn't so much with Airstream as it is with the independent suppliers. If a supplier stops providing something Airstream doesn't have much choice except to find something else that will work. Also I suspect that AS prefers to purchase something that will do the job for a lower price to help keep the profit margins up.

I believe it is the same. I found mine from the RV Parts online store. 80 bucks.
If you need measurements PM me.

Went to Jackson Center yesterday and they advised that my lockset is no longer available even though mine looks like a L300 based on pictures I saw in catalogs. They provided a kit that converts mine to another type of lockset with inner and outer plates to cover up any hole size variances on the outer and inner skin. They advised that this kit is used on both trailers and motorhomes that there is no difference. The kit they provided appears considerable more robust than my current lockset. There were no instructions or information with the kit. They just handed me a bunch of parts put some in a bag gave me verbal instructions and that was it. The lockset has the name Tri/Mark, New Hampton, IA stamped on it.

Hope that works well for you. My 280 Classic motorhome had the L series lock, and I was easily able to repair the tumbler when it stopped locking. I am holding off installing until I come back form a weekender later this month. Will post the results for sure.
