'61 door lockset repair/replace

My 61 Overlander is in dire need of a new door lockset. It had a Chesler unit, round knob, push pin lock. Now the exterior door knob just turns, no action.. I had to break in thru one of the jalousie panes to get the door open. Luckily the interior door knob worked. Now i've removed the unit, and no locksmith has parts. What now? Any replacement units out there? Any parts? any reproduction, close fit that will work? Help!! Mike

Mike,

I have seen a number of what look like repro units on ebay, but not lately. I think they were going for 50-60 bucks complete.

Check out Oasis RV

I was able to get some very unique replacement parts for mine.

They may be able to help with repair or replacement.

Good luck

good news! Took the old lockset to a local locksmith/hardware store. You know the kind, little downtown shop, been in business since 1948. He piddled with it, disasembled it(I couldn't believe how complicated the Chesler lock was) cleaned it up, grinded some parts, buffed some others, pounded on a few, and when he put it all back together, lo and behold it works better than ever. The locksmith was impressed with the lack of wear on a 40 yr old lockset. He made me a new set of keys(same key lock as a '56 ford) and told me to save my old original Chesler Key. I am gonna be on the lookout tho for a replacement unit, ya never know when your gonna need one. Mike

ya gotta love places like that!

i am very fortunate to like 4 blocks from what can best described as a mom and pop hardware store.

the store has had a hardware operation since 1921. all in the same family.

great place, tin ceilings, maple floors. dogs welcome!

hardware in bins, not blister packs. the people there know their stuff well and know where everything is. unlike the big box places.

between my vintage harley and the excella there are always some odd fastener or plumbing part that can be found there.

life is good!

I agree, sadly a new Super Walmart just opened in our city... wonder how long the old hardware store can hold out. I insist on going to the mom and pop stores, so what if it cost another 10 15 cents an item. I'll save that much in getting the right part the first time. Mike
