Question 1976 door problem

I have a 1976 Tradewind. The door has been damaged from coming open while traveling. We are having wood floors put in and I am afraid of water damage!! What suggestions do you have for rebending the door to fit? Can we fix this problem or is there someone who specializes in body work? Can you get a new replacement door? What can we do to stop the door from coming open while traveling? PLEASE HELP!

1976 door problem

This is a problem that many Vintage trailer owners experience. Since there is some risk of either fracturing the inner skeleton of the door or the hinges, I would suggest seeking expert assistance. I know that I did, and am quite happy that I did. The door on my '64 Overlander now fits very well and is water tight. I have had two shops work on the door with very good results. P & S Trailer Service of Helena, OH performed the most taxing repair following having the door blown open and the door knob forced through the sidewall - - the door was as near perfect as one could expect for a coach of '64 vintage. Less than a month later, while on the road to have a new handset and deadbolt installed the door blew open again in transit and again had to be repaired. This time, Ace Fogdall RV in Cedar Falls, Iowa handled the repair (they are Iowa's Airstream dealer). I have been a customer of Ace Fogdall's for more than eight years and am totally satisfied with their service.

Good luck in solving your door dilemma.

Kevin

There are several reasons why the door may fly open in transit.

1. Balance the tires, wheels, hub and drums as an assembly. The door area can and does flex.
2. The striker bolt is worn.
3. The striker pocket is worn.
4. The door is not proper fitting within the door jamb.
