1973 Safari, locked out

Hi! I need all the help I can get from all of you veterans Airstreamers.
We just bought a 1973 23 foot Safari, we brought it home last night.
Today after work a wanted to check to see if the PO winterized it as he said he did, but I could not open the main door, the tumbler went around clockwise and c'clockwise but the door would not open, it was getting very cold outside so I decided to try it some other day, when I pulled the key the tumbler came with it, I thought I was going to put it back in and turn it again, well, it didn' work, it doesn't seem to turn at all and now I am locked out of the trailer.
I am sure I may be able to fix it if I could get inside and remove the lock.
Does anybody knows how the mechanism works or is there someone who has a squematic or blue print of this lock. I hope Andy from Inland RV reads this thread, maybe he can give me some advise. What a heck of a way to start with my very first A/S.
Thanks to all, Rudy

rudy-do you know if this is a typical problem for the 70's trailers? Sometimes my 71 safari lock "hesitates" and worries me..........jim

Jim.

Your lock could have worn or bent parts.

Does the striker bolt have a notch in it?

If so, that will need replacing, as well as probably the striker pocket.

Is the exterior handle still flush with the surface? If not, then someone used force to try and open the door. That says parts internally are bent.

Andy-Yes the striker bolt does have grooves in it--But the latch is flush--can I purchase a new striker? Or a upgrade "kit"?

Yes, you can purchase the striker bolt.

You should also replace the striker pocket.

That would solve the "hanging up" problem.
