Ditto. Speaking as a 'certified information system security professional' it's a disaster, and always has been totally insecure...

Besides the fact that I'd rather choose my friends, and talk to them in person or on the phone...I spend too much time goofing off on the internet (like the Airstream Forums (grin)) as it is...

I’m not on Facebook either, but discovered via google some time back that everything under the sun was being tracked and used and shared.

I turned everything off, particularly Siri & Search, and monitor this more closely now, but so many things are turned on automatically with updates that I have to set an alert on my calendar.

I no longer have an Android phone, either, but plenty is unknowingly tracked with the IPhone, I am sure.

And I salute your experience, and your obvious ability to learn much from it!

In my experience, some never learn at all...sadly.

We had a very eerie phone incident two weeks ago. We received via a snail mail and invitation to a family member's college graduation party. SuEllyn and I discussed it, and we decided that we would make the 300 mile trip to Dade City for the party. When I went to put the information about the party on the calendar in my phone, I found that it was already there including the time and the location. ?????????????????????????

The difference between us and The Millennials.

I'm a millennial. I think you're way off-base. While I don't claim to speak for my entire generation (we're not all the same, after all), data collection, sharing, and privacy is a huge issue for everyone. We might see our relationship with technology a little differently, but we're all concerned.

The technology is not going away. Unless we all band together to put rules in place to prevent abuse and punish bad actors, companies will continue to do whatever helps their bottom line. And unless you want to live in a cabin in the woods with no electronics, you can't just "opt out" of this stuff.

You can turn off app access to the microphone, and turn off Siri, etc.

The only things that pop up in my feed are things I look at a lot, like Harleys, Airstreams and dogs. I’ve never had something picked up out of a conversation and show up on my phone. I think some people forget what they’ve looked at and are surprised when it comes up.

It DOES update the location of my vehicle and it knows when I’m at work, because location is turned on but I could turn that off if I really cared.

Great clip, thanks. A Jim Carrey piece, What It All Means, popped up next, and is worth a watch also IMO.

Sure you can.

Society was doing just fine before social media, better actually I would argue. I “opted out” years ago because it became a “time vampire” for me.

Personally I find that I keep in touch with my true friends regardless.

You're saying this using a computer, posting on the internet, on a social media platform.

Yes, you can choose not to actively participate in social media (though neither of us have), but that doesn't stop you from being monitored. Your data is still being collected, shared, and sold. Facebook tracks you regardless of whether you use the service. Google tracks everyone it interacts with, which is pretty much everyone.

Do you have an email account? A bank? A library card? A driver's license? Buy stuff on Amazon? Ever go to the doctor?

You can't just opt out of this stuff. Digital privacy is everyone's problem, even those of us who don't use Facebook.
