ham operators

Hi- I am K3KMJ and my husband Joe is N3MND. We are not active at this time with our radios but want to be... We have equipment issues and install upgrades to do, and we work full time so it is slow going as we restore our new ole' 1978 Argosy and also work towards getting back on the air. I will post some of our rig issues/questions relative to camping, ham radio and traveling and maybe we can get back to where we want to go!

Study Guide Arrived

The Extra Class License Manual arived in the mail today and it is almost as thick as the Technician and General class license study guides put together. There are 738 questions in the pool. I guess I had better get reading if I want to pass the Extra exam before the end of the year.

many of those questions will be different approaches to the same thing so it is not quite so daunting as it first appears. I always found it worked well to put the book somewhere where you can read a question or 2 instead of going into mental overload by trying to do too much at once. The bathroom works well for this.

It is not at all difficult. A few years ago, the requirement to know the Morse code was eliminated. That was a big stumbling block to many.

I would suggest dropping by or calling Ham Radio outlet in San Diego.
Ham Radio Outlet
They can put you in touch with some of the local amateur radio clubs. Radio clubs ofter offer classes for the various levels of license. If all you are interested in to start with is using your IC-208H, you would only need the basic lowest level license the "technician Class"

As long as you are amateur racing, using amateur radio would be totally appropriate. There is a restriction to amateur radio that makes it illegal to use for any business activity.

Here is a good place to start looking around:
American Radio Relay League | Ham Radio Association and Resources
This is the national ham radio organization.

Once you get involved with it, I think you will discover a lot of other interesting and useful things you can do with it.

Regards,

Ken

When I took the test a few years ago I found that the most of the answers on the chart questions could be eliminated by looking at the chart, leaving just a couple answers to choose from. In the end I hadn't needed to turn on the calculator for the exam.
Do the practice questions till you can get 90% frequently then go try the test, you don't need 100% to pass that exam.

NevadaGeo,
Thanks, I've been studying hard and I'm half way through the study manual. I have an app for my I-pad that generates sample tests for the Extra ticket. It was what I used to study for my General so I am hoping it helps me with the Extra exam. Right now being only half way through the study manual I get around 30 of the 50 questions correct on the sample tests, so I am confident once I get through the manual I will be able to ace the exam. I am signed up to take the exam at a local club in late February and if I don't pass it, there is another local club giving the exam in mid-March.

I recently got a "new to me" Icom I-746 and made a copper J-pole for 2 meter. I've been working on getting my shack grounded properly before putting up an HF antenna. Once spring arrives I plan on putting up a G5RV or if I have the money a B & W folded dipole.

Back then I used the practice tests at QRZ.com QRZ.COM QRZ Ham Radio Practice Tests but it don't load for me today, not sure if it's still working. Haven't been on there much in years. There seems to be another link on QRZ UP GRADE TO EXTRA CLASS that seems to point to another group, that might cost money. HamTestOnline™ - Ham Radio Exam Courses
