HAM Operator Thread...

Dear Airforum Amateur Radio (and Future) Operators,

My sense is that there are many current HAM operators within the Airforum community. I've conducted a preliminary search for a dedicated "HAM Operator Thread" or similar thread with negative results. I have found a few isolated posts about HAM operations but not a dedicated "go-to" thread - but I could have missed it.

After contacting a couple of HAMs out there regarding such a thread, the consensus is to start one. This thread is intended to spread and exchange HAM information relative to "Airstreaming."

So here goes...

It would be good to hear from those of you out there about how you've manages to design Airstream HAM Shacks inside your rigs.

Interesting discussions might include:

1. Introduction - Name, Callsign, Equipment summary; and Photos;
2. Space for HAM shacks inside Airstreams;
3. How you've got the XYL to buy-into using such space;
4. Antenna mounting options;
5. Integration of TOW vehicle radio installs with Airstream;
6. Dedicated Power Sources (solar, battery, etc.);
7. Antenna designs for Airstream boondocking;
8. Off-grid options;
9. Interesting radio contacts from your Airstream HAM Shack;
10. General technical question/answer discussions.

The laundry list will certainly grow over time, but the above might provide food for thought...

To start off... Here's a link to antenna mounting option that one of the members has used on his Airstream:

...I guess I didn't look hard enough. There are many similar threads going back to 2005. Just thought this might be a good way to meet other Airstream Hams out there.

N2XBW here. I've not been very "radio-active" these last years since cell phone and internet has made such inroads into the HAM hobby. I am considering setting up my MH with at least a 2m rig. There are lots of other HAM threads on this forum, but I haven't frequented them since going quiet (no, I didn't say ") silent" a few years ago.
My latest project is converting an unused Winegard satellite receiver dish on my MH's roof to a directional wi-fi yagi antenna. [See:
Anyway, good luck with the new thread, and 73 de N2XBW.

N2XBW:

Good to hear you're transition from "quiet" to "operating"...

Your video is a Great idea... We stay at a RV camp on the Conejos River in CO - they've got a real weak WiFi signal that would be easily boosted with this experiment. Thanks for sending!

Hi, K4TCJ here. Just bought a 2006 Parkway. Will be installing an Icom IC 7000, Tarheel 75 antenna, TurboTuner and ClearSpeach speaker. Ordered a rear ladder and will fasten the antenna to it. Also ordered a rear view camera that has extra inputs so the IC 7000 screen can be shown. The VHF/ UHF antennas will be mounted on the roof top.
All of this gear was in a FJ Cruiser then our Land Cruiser.
Will keep you posted as the install comes along. Check out the "shack" on QRZ

Thanks for the info, K4TCJ! Sounds like a good set up. I've been operating the ICOM 7000 coupled with a High Sierra 1800 in my Suburban for 6 years - great radio for sure! Looking forward to seeing your shack online. We're at the "RV HAM QFest" here in Quartzite, AZ now and there's some very impressive mobile, portable, and solar rigs set up in the desert.

73!
