1963 Front Overhead Compartment

Has anyone put a control center in the overhead compartment of a 1963 Airstream? How much weight can you put in the compartment? This is my idea. I'm thinking about taking out the slides and screwing a piece of maple to the compartment on the inside so it would be flush. Just not sure if it would hold.
