WIFI reception

As you all know the wireless in the laptop can only reach so far.Well I have been looking for an antenna to hook up to wireless when camping. As much as we go to St.Augustine a friend of mine lives just outside of the park and told me I could always hook up to there as with a few other friends that live there.
What I am wanting to know is that would this be worth getting and using it when I am there. It also says that with the right setup it can reach 1 mile or more and the way I see it I will not have to pay for internet access.
That would be really nice to have.
Here is what I have been looking at.A forum member pointed this to me and it looks really good but I am wanting other opinions and if there is something better.
Antenna for wifi hookup

Here is the site he sent me to.

I was looking at that route, but with the possibilty of not having access at times I opted for the Verizon unlimited acess for $59 month.

PS: the hawking is a good unit

I was looking for the same thing last summer. I have a Verizon Air Card for my laptop, but unless it is near a major city, it only runs at about 128kbps. I purchased the Linksys Range Extender ( Linksys.com - Products/Wireless/Basic Networking/Range Expanders & Antennas/WRE54G ) which does help. When the campground has WiFi available, I go to the office area or laundry, plug in the range extender, press the setup button to let it get the right ip address, then unplug and take it back to the trailer and plug it in. My best results to date have been to place the Range Extender in the window of the Airstream. However, next year I may try to figure out a way to place the Range Extender between the trailer and the Office antenna --at least on the correct side of the trailer. The only problem with that is it needs to be plugged in and my Bambi only has an outside plug on the street-side. Having said all that, the Range Extender did give me better reception than just using the Laptop WiFi antenna.

I have the same problem all the time. It seems that most RV parks have just enough WIFI to say they have it. I usually seem to be in a spot that is weak. i work on the road, so WIFI is important to me. I purchased an antenna from Quickertek (:: QuickerTek :: Wireless Performance for Macs ::) that finds weak signals and boosts them. It is easy to use, but a little pricey. I have had good results with it and use it all the time now.

How about...

I think I read on Gadget's Tech Chronicals that it's possible to take along your airport express (the small box that plugs into a plug) and use it as a "repeater" which would extend the range of the wifi. Has anyone done this or gone this route vs. buying an antenna extender for the Mac?

PC card
I have had one tor about a year. I use it for work and travel. It works great! I would recommend it. I have used it out west and in the Appalachians and I have been pleased with the coverage. Phil

Card

Do you mean an Air card?
I would like to use one of those but I am wanting a lot of power to reach across the park so I have total connection.Plus if I were to go else where and they have free wifi,I could connect to that also being far away from them.
Does anyone out there use one of these Hawking devices.I am really leaning towards getting one but the closest one is 100 miles away.I will have to make a trip out of it and get one on the way this monday to try it out.
If all else fails though,i will probably end up getting on line with one of the providers.

I've done some wireless deployments and all I can really add is that each case is different. Topology plays a major role, as can weather and other small odds and ends. Best thing one could hope for is to beta test and find out. One thing is for sure, the cost is low and you seem to be looking to buy from a major retail outfit, which means that if it didn't work, you could return it.

True

That is true.I have never really used anything like this.I am hopeing that it does work though. As much as we go to St.Augustine a few of my friends live just outside the statepark and have told me that I could use there wireless anytime I want if I can connect to it.I would say that the longest distance is about a half a mile but the others are just a few hundred feet from me.They have a public wifi in St.Augustine and a lot of free areas but I am hoping this will make it easy to not have to drive somewhere to get it.If all fails though,I will send it back and get online internet.I would probably be the easiest thing to do.

I'd love to say go for it, it'll be great, but like snake oil, I've tried lots of product over the last few years. Some do help, while others, though the best of ideas and intentions have yielded zero help.

You are right about that.

If this does not work out as planned it will be ok.I really did not spend a lot of money.so it wont be a problem.Crossing my fingers though.A lot of people have said this company is a great one.I will soon find out.
