Can it warn you about upcoming low overpasses?

I read recently that GPS is hot amongst theives now. Even if you don't leave it on the windshield they look for the suction cup ring stain and if they see that break in and hunt around for the GPS. The article recommends cleaning your windshield when you pull the GPS off.

Great information on the Tom TOm unit. How about other units?? What are the plus and minus features to watch for?? I certainly get the feeling that those that have GPS wouldn't be without it. When we were boaters, we predated the GPS units but I'm very anxious to look into getting one now. Any word on other units?? Pros - Cons???

I have owned a Garmin 76 for a couple of years and use for most trips. I think the features to consider in purchasing a GPS start with the intended use. I wanted a GPS that could be used for both hiking and vehicle routing. Hence the 76 (which also has great boat features). The trade off is that with a portable/hiking unit there is no voice commands. When driving I have to look at the screen or assign that to the co-pilot.

If you are going to use the GPS for vehicle routing, the major feature to look for is auto routing. Auto routing comes into play when you deviate from the planned route. Without auto routing, the GPS will direct you back to the planned route. With auto routing, the GPS will recalculate the route from your present position. For me auto routing was a must.

When purchasing a GPS also consider the mapping software. Most companies have proprietary mapping software that you will want to purchase along with the GPS. When planning a trip, I typically work on it on the PC and then download it into the GPS.

When flying and renting a car, I always take the GPS and use it to navigate around.

The TomTom One has auto routing. After peeving it off by going off-route, it will sulkily switch to the next best alternative. You can also tell it to ignore part of the route and it will switch to the next best route.

BTW, anybody know if you can order updates for the built in units? I was playing around with "Goldie" the other day and she had a couple of restaurants listed in our community that have been closed a couple of years. But, she did have the phone numbers for the others that she had and that makes it easy for call-ahead on the fly.

My Magellan Maestro has built in AAA Tourbook which includes campgrounds. Type in a city and it gives you all campgrounds (and all other tourbook info) within a range. You can then autoroute to your selection from your current position. It also has bluetooth connectivity for my cell phone. When the campground info displays the phone number on the GPS, I just touch the screen and it dials the number if I want to call ahead for a reservation. Hands free. Cool...really cool!

I have found the arrival time in the Garmin to be very accurate. It adjusts itself as you gain or lose time.

For whatever reason, my TomTom One is very accurate with regard to distance, arrival time, etc. Doesn't sound like thats the case with all.

Been there - got my little Garmin stolen out of the Suburban this way. It was stored in the center console. The windshield did have the giveaway ring from the (illegal in CA) suction cup.
I replaced it with a Magellan unit, which so far I like better than the Garmin that was stolen. However, I use it seldom anymore, here in SoCal. I only use it when going to an unknown address, or when travelling far distances with the Airstream in tow.
The GPS ( named "Hannah" - it's a long story involving inappropriate material) did a fine job this summer on my trip from CA to Austin TX, and back via Albuquerque. It's just nice to see distance, time and have the next exit feature.

Maybe TomTom just has to get used to our driving habits before he can predict the time accurately

I have a Tom Tom 300 (older unit) and it still works fine. When I go off route it nags for a while, but if I select alt route it figures it out or I can wait for it to figure it out (more nags) on it's own.

It gets very confused when roads are moved. AZ-260 was redone in some areas over the past few year and will show that I am off the road. When it notices that I am getting close to the old road alignment it will shout out "Right Turn Ahead!". It catches me by surprise everytime it does it/

"Mandy" likewise doesn't appreciate new road construction. If it's very extensive, I have to send her to her room for awhile. As someone alluded to earlier, I think my wife take some perverse pleasure when Mandy gets confused.

A couple of years ago the San Diego Union did a feature on the teams that actually drive the routes and record the info for MapQuest, Garmin, Tom-Tom, etc. It was implied that certain corporations help pay for the gas used by these teams to make sure the route passes certain retail establishments! I have a Garmin and it is great. Used it last week in Bountiful, Kaysville and Ogden UT. Never failed me.

TomTom One V2 is blue tooth enabled and has campground info along the route.
