Re: PEPLINK|PEPWAVE WPA/WPA2 Security Vulnerability

Quote from PEPLINK email received today:

"On October 16th, 2017, an industry wide vulnerability (VU#228519) in WPA/WPA2 was made public."

For PEPLINK/PEPWAVE product owners, below is the link to the PEPLINK Website which contains details and planned corrective actions:

https://forum.peplink.com/t/security...u-228519/12715

==========

Note: I have no connection to PEPLINK/PEPWAVE, except as a concerned owner of a PEPWAVE Surf-on-the-Go (WiFi for WAN) portable router.

Interesting. Says Industry Wide vulnerability. I got an email from Netgear a few days back stating a new firmware update was available for our home WiFi. That's the first time I can remember them telling us specifically to update the firmware. Maybe related?? The email doesn't mention a specific problem.

So I updated my WiFi router at home (Netgear). It loaded three patches, but didn't provide any information about them. Think I'll wait a couple weeks and check again.

Thanks very much for the heads-up Phoenix.

This effects every wifi device that uses WPA2, which is one of the most common methods of wifi encryption and security.

I too use a Pepwave Surf On The Go (and have been using Pepwave products for years). I did NOT receive an email and, having just checked its' Firmware:

(Version: 1.0.26 (build:1260) Date: 2015-06-02)

I'm told "Your firmware is up-to-date." Interesting that 2+ year old Firmware is "up to date".

WiFi

I hope you are all using encryption software while on the road, otherwise it is easy to get hacked.

For those of you so inclined: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/M...rotocol-140531

Not trying to scare anyone. Just be aware you need to upgrade your router/WiFi software soon. It looks like this exploit is pretty hard to pull off by the bad guys, but still worth paying attention to.
