Favorite useful websites on the road??

A lot of talk here about Wifi and such. How about sharing useful favorite web sites while on the road. I will be making a list and checking it twice.

thecatsandi has some awesome weather & road condition sites she uses. Leave it to a pilot. Michelle, care to share if you get in from the road in time to see this?

Along with this website, a roll of toilet paper is mandatory:

RV Dump Stations, Sani Stations, Dump Points; a comprehensive directory

I use Weather Underground for local radars, hard to beat that street level mapping radar overlay. FWIW I use an aircard for on the road internet access.

We keep the basics. WalMart Store Locator, Trader Joe's, Flying J Location, Passport America, Walgreen's Store Locator, personal banking, local newspapers---and now, Airforums! Trader Joe's are worth finding--have great coffee at reasonable prices, condensed/dehydrated items in tiny PACKETS such as chicken/beef stock and lemon juice, and many other healthy and unique items.

Google Earth.
Lets you view a campground layout in advance. Coupled with a site map from Reserve America or the campground itself, you can better choose where exactly you wish to stay.

That's a great one---how many times are they not what is advertised.

Some of mine are safety-related, such as

Sunrise, sunset, dawn and dusk times around the World - Gaisma

to determine local times for dusk & dawn to avoid travel in changing light conditions; or, to avoid traffic problems and road closures, AND to be aware of lane closures

National Traffic and Road Closure Information

Or, for interesting places to stop & eat

Roadfood.com

Years ago I used both the Starbucks store locator and the Mobil "On The Run" store locator to try to find newer -- preferably, "safer" -- parts of a metro area to fuel, feed and rest. The economy has changed, and I now drive diesel, so truck stop locators are more important.

As to mapping services, Google Maps is poor for route planning, but I like the "Street View" service for ogling a highway change, etc. Rand McNally's trip planner is similar to their MILEMAKER commercial software in that it provides "straightest line" guidance with roads that have adequate lane size, signage, overhead clearance, and road shoulders strong enough to pull an eighteen wheeler over

Rand McNally - Plan a Road Trip

Google maps, yesterday, sent me on a route that was one hour shorter, but 121-miles farther than the Rand-Mc planner. The use of both gets me the route I want with experimentation.

Most importantly, alternative routing in case of weather or traffic or road problems.

I also like to have handy a list of local AM radio stations for up-to-date traffic & weather

Radio-Locator

I also like having a list of truck stops

Truck Stop Travel Center Locations by Map

Having lived life-long in Tornado Alley (until a year ago) makes me sensitive to being caught out in the middle of nowhere. A truckstop is a port in a storm. I've been on the road all too close to tornadoes several times (nothing like 100-mph winds and near-zero visibility to get your sustained attention).

Good one Robert

I like the FlyingJ fuel website. Even if I am not able to get to one, it gives me a per gallon an idea of what I should be paying.

Good idea Michael. Their site must be taking a vacation right now. Something to ponder in the meantime - GasBuddy.com - Find Low Gas Prices in the USA and Canada. The gas temperature map along the left column is interesting. (thanks to klattu for the link)

Panoramio - Photos of the World sometimes has closer views than standard Google.

RV Park Reviews :: Campground Search has been useful.

Internet Archive is super for anything in the public domain: books, documentary films, old radio programs, Hollywood films, things from other countries. Yesterday, I watched several films of Presidents giving speeches. Here's one of Pres. Coolidge, giving a short speech on the White House lawn.

Internet Archive: Free Download: President Coolidge, Taken on the White House Ground

Even though it's full of junk, there are some useful things at youtube. A couple of examples:

Here's some footage of soldiers on Armistice Day.

and a very early recording of Caruso:
