Originally it was wifi only. Now it's cellular.

I bought a Peak wireless backup camera for the trailer. Works great. Less than 100 and I have it wired to the license plate light for power so I can see that I have cleared cars and no one has slipped in on me especially in city traffic.

Not as helpful yet for backing in to a campsite but that will improve over time when I get more used to it. I think the fisheye lens view is slightly confusing - but I love the mic in the camera because I can hear Sue clearly when she's talking (and doesn't have to yell).

Highly highly recommended!!
How did they install the camera? Did they mount it to th window or did the drill holes in the skin?

Thanks

SchuHouse - in reply 112 you describe a setup for the Voyager to work with the Rand McNally GPS. I emailed the folks at RV cam and they said it couldn't be done directly but only through another receiver that's then wired to the Rand. That sounds like what you did.

How has it been working for you?

I'm thinking of it. I'm not a fan of the "native" GPS in my Chevy and have seen a friend's Rand - including configuration for your rig specifics and the camera integration is great. But I really was hoping not to buy ANOTHER receiver.

I am assuming the receiver is in the 5" monitor that came with the camera - there isn't a video out but I wonder if it's possible to wire it out to the Rand?

Hmmmmm.....

My wired camera has functioned perfectly for 7 years. It is both on the truck bumper and another one on the rear of the trailer. I heard then about the bad reliability and intermittency of wireless cameras, and apparently that hasn't changed.

I beg to differ. The Voyager consistently gets good reviews and the wireless system I sell (if you have an iPhone) works great.

You both have it wrong. If you're gonna worry about anything, it's wireless hitches!

My only problem with my wireless camera is that it uses the same frequency as the Bluetooth in the truck. The image intermittently tears up from the Bluetooth. I have learned to use the backup camera in the rear view mirror although the image is a bit small and the camera is slightly offset.

Not so with the camera system I sell. It doesn't operate on the Bluetooth frequency nor is the image offset in any way. The image is exactly as it appears in a regular rear view mirror.

I'm not trying to be adversarial, only pointing out that there are a lot of blanket statements such as the last two being made without full knowledge of the facts and the technology involved. Such remarks tend to discourage those who may actually have a need or interest in new technology.

As far as I know most wireless rear view cameras operate on the same frequency. When used only for backup, I don't see a problem.
But when used as a true rear view camera, meaning it is on all of the time.
Let's say you have a 30' trailer with a rear view camera and someone pulls along side of you where their transmitter overpowers yours, because it is closer. How do you prevent interference?

Sorry - #134 was meant to be exceedingly humorous (maybe the emoticon didn't make it? ). You know - turn the impending "wired vs wireless" camera argument into a perennial hitch argument.

Get it? It's really incredibly funny and insightful social commentary....

Ok...I'll be leaving now....

Wireless back up camera.. Recommendation

Steve, don't feel bad! We all shank one every now and again. Not everyone has the resources at their disposal that I do. Panama Red Inc. has a review board of professional comedians on staff, on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every response I post is reviewed by this panel of professionals, ensuring it meets the standards of highest comedic content, ranked on a scale of 1 to 100 in seventeen different categories, from political relevance, to ethnic offensiveness, to just simple physical slapstick. We then enter the humorous quip into our database that compares it to every post that Panama Red Inc. has made in the previous ten years, across multiple forums, to ensure freshness and lack of repetition... When it comes to forum humor, Panama Red will spare no expense!

-Red, ensuring comedic content since 1962...
