Safety Camera/LCD Monitor

Woe is us. We inherited a tv camera/monitor-safety system when we bought our Airstream. We spend $400 to have it installed, with the camera mounted on the back window of our 19' Bambi and wired up to a bracket on the dashboard for the 7-inch LCD monitor. It worked just fine until we went over a bump and it blacked out. The installer checked it and said the monitor itself was faulty. It needs to be replaced.

The problem is, we don't need an entire system, just a monitor. WHERE can we just get a monitor? The manufacturer's name isn't to be found on anything, just 'TFT'. There was one company on Google with this name but they told me they only make tv monitors.

A new system would cost around $500 and presumably it would cost us another $400 to have it installed. I'd rather spend that money on a trip in the Airstream somewhere.

Any help, suggestions, advice would be most welcomed. Craved, in fact.

Muddy,
Sorry to hear that and I know this will not be much help, but TFT just is an abbreivation for Thin Film Transistor. A technology used with LCD screens also known as Active Matrix.

The monitor is nothing special, it more than likely has a yellow RCA jack on it. Best bet would probably be find a cheap monitor (eg portable DVD player), unplug the one on your dash and plug the camera jack into it.

You can buy a head unit indash 7" dvd player with an auxilliary input for the backup camera. How is it connected at the TV to TT (at the rear of TV)?

You might also want to check really really carefully that no wire connection popped loose in the bump, that you really have power to your monitor (and the camera), etc. Maybe you can borrow from a bud a screen of the type the others suggest and see if the problem really goes away.

Thanks so much, you guys. We wound up finding the original manufacturer, who remembered the original purchaser. He sent us a replacement as it was under warrantee. We returned the defective one and are all set to go. We is lucky!
