Radio Antenna

On our last outage, we lost our radio antenna. Any suggestions on a replacement? Any time saving suggestions on the replacement work? How does one get to the back of the radio in the trailer if he wanted to run an a/b switch to different source to the speakers in the trailer?

I just replaced the antenna on my excella this past weekend. We went to the auto parts store and picked a replacement antenna from the selection that they had. For mine all I had to do was unscrew the antenna from the base and screw the new antenna on. There were a couple of indexing nubs on the base that didn't quite match with the new antenna. I knocked these off with a die grinder.

Now, if you are talking about the antenna cable breaking between the exterior base and the radio I can't help.

An update: I was able to obtain an antenna with the spring flexibility. I was not able to find this type of antenna at the two auto parts stores that I tried. I purchased the antenna at Fleet Farm.

I kept the original 1/3 ball base that screws to the trailer, and to the 2/3 ball connected to the new spring antenna. The teeth on the two pieces aren't perfect, but are 95%, and not noticeable except by a perfectionist.

Thumbs up CB 108" whip

I need to source an old style 108" CB whip antenna for my '65 Safari.

Anyone have any suggestions? Sure would like to replace as-original.

Given their recent shifts in product line, I am not certain whether my source will still have them; but I was able to special-order a 108" CB whip antenna for my '64 Overlander from my local Radio Shack Franchisee. I mention the fact that he was a franchisee because I am not certain whether the antenna came from one of his "other" sources or Radio Shack as he operated an appliance and furniture store from the same location. It has been about four years since I purchased the replacement mast and spring base for my antenna.

Good luck with your search!

Kevin

I may have a 108 antenna laying around from my trucking days. I don't have the spring know, but your welcome to the antenna if I can find it. Robert

Thanks all ... & appreciate the lead - Kevin

My local Radio Shack had everything in inventory.

The 102" S/S whip, the 6" spring and the swivel base mount.

102" Whip Antenna with Ball Mount & Spring

The 102" whip makes a really great amateur radio antenna so it is worth keeping. Also, it looks very vintage.

There are 3 components:
- The stainless 102" whip
- The stainless ball mount
- The stainless barrel-style spring

The whip is available from Radio Shack online and they ship to your local store. It's stainless steel and as good as any.

The ball mount and spring are available through them too, but they carry only cheap chrome plated versions, not the better stainless versions.

Look around online for stainless versions and you'll be much happier with the result over time. We hope to carry them in the future so check with us, but they are available elsewhere with careful searching.
